In this video, we will talk about how to view IP cameras or DVRs remotely. There are mainly 4 ways:
1. Use Manufacturer’s P2P Viewer App.
2. Use Port-Forwarding.
3. Use VPN.
4. Use Cloud Recording.
We will talk about the pros and cons of each method, and the steps to setup cloud recording.
If the manufacturer offers a P2P Viewer App, it is very easy to view the camera remotely. Usually you just need to install a mobile app, connect the camera to WiFi, and then scan a QR code to add the camera to the viewer app. The disadvantages are: The camera must be a P2P camera; it only works with the manufacturer’s viewer app and it relies on the manufacturer’s P2P server, which is often not in U.S.
Most IP cameras have a web browser-based interface for managing or viewing cameras. To connect remotely, you can set a Port Mapping on your router that maps the WAN IP & port number to the camera’s LAN IP & port number. It works with most IP cameras, and it does not use P2P. So it does not require a special viewer app, nor does it rely on the manufacturer’s server. The disadvantages are: You need to configure the router, and it requires a static IP address or DDNS service.
The VPN solution is similar to Port Mapping, but it is more secure as the camera is not exposed to the Internet. However, for most home users, it is probably too hard to setup.
Most IP cameras can automatically upload footage to a cloud server. You can view the footage in the cloud without connecting to the camera. CameraFTP cloud recording service is fully optimized for IP cameras and DVRs. Compared with other methods, it has the following advantages:
1. Your camera cannot be accessed from the Internet, so it is more secure than P2P and Port Mapping.
2. It supports both live viewing & playback. Other methods usually don't support playback.
3. It records footage to the cloud, which is more secure than local recording or no-recording.
4. CameraFTP viewer app is even easier than P2P viewer apps. You just need to log in to view your cameras.
5. It supports far more concurrent video connections.
The main disadvantage is: you must configure the camera to record footage to CameraFTP, which could be challenging to some users.
