Lake Haiyaha at Rocky Mountain National Park, What it's really like hiking there (at 4am).

Oooooooo, this one was a scary hike for us. We woke up at 12:30 AM, yup you read that right, and drove to Rocky Mountain National Park. When we got there, there were only two other cars. Hiking in the day, one thing, hiking in pitch black, completely different. Plus, there was a rock scramble...

On June 28th, 2022, a rock slide occurred. Rocks fell off of Hallett Peak and created fine grain powder, called glacial flour, that fell into Lake Haiyaha. This fine powder is slow to sink to the bottom and as a result absorbs the purple and indigo colors. This causes the lake to have this milky green color. At some point all the glacier flour will sink and the lake color will return to normal.

We do want to note that the footage recorded for this video occurred before the National Park Service rescinded its interim guidance on recording in a national park without permits. We do plan to visit more national parks this year and have started the process to request permits.
