Why Does an Air Conditioner Need a Hard Start Kit?

Hard start and soft start are two different things. Soft start is recommended for ac running of generators. Hard start is for compressors that are going out pulling to many amps.

I have a hard start kit now (though you guys called it a "start assist" when you installed it) but we're going to be asking to have it replaced with a soft start kit. With what seems like more and more power outages happening here in Houston, TX lately, we're investing in a generator and everyone has recommended getting a soft start kit as it will be easier on the generator should we need it.

I always thought it was a soft start kit? I had to put one on my 5th wheel, so I could use my generator to power the trailer.

the customer needs to know that a hard start kit is a short-term fix. Major repairs or unit replacement is in the future... but how far into the future us not known.
