Welcome to "Real Estate Investing Explained", a brand new series presented by Dr. Adam Gower of GowerCrowd for beginners looking for information about investing in real estate! In this series, Dr. Adam Gower will go about explaining many important aspects of real estate investing that beginners need to know.

In this episode, we will be looking at the accredited investor standard and discussing what it is all about.

So, what is an accredited investor? Well, technically an accredited investor is anybody who has earned over $200,000 or more for the past two consecutive years with a reasonable chance of earning the same this year or $300,000 if you're filing as a married couple, or 1 million dollars of net worth excluding your primary residence.

Why is there a such thing as an accredited investor standard in the first place? Well, the way the law works is that anybody who has a certain amount of income or wealth must, de facto, be educated. It's essentially a proxy for education. Another reason why it was written this way was the idea that if you have a certain amount of wealth, then you can afford to lose the money that you might invest or that you can hire people who can advise you on whether or not you're making a prudent investment.
