Regarding Mario Kart World, I've had cases where I was mashing a golden mushroom and was gaining nothing on computer players just ahead of me that had no mushrooms/boosts.

Funny thing about the rubber banding in World, it's actually tied to how much drifting, grinding & tricks you do. It's easier to see on Knockout Tour, but if you just drive with no tricks you hardly get hit at all by items. It's how some are getting three stars on 150cc.

The reason game/movie/TV studios boast about engagement for their products is because of their marketing departments. They basically use social media engagement as a metric for their success so when the product fails, they can't be blamed. "It's not OUR fault your movie/game/show failed, we made it trend #1 on every platform!

I refer to the art style the new marathon uses as color vomit. A lot of modern game artists think that throwing as many saturated colors at you as possible is a replacement for having an actual art style. You can consider it a result of an over correction from the 360 era where game maps had a lot of detail (for the time), but were all dull shades of gray and brown. Then games started adding vibrant colors to those detailed maps, and now they think the colors mean the maps don't have to have detail. That's why marathon looks like a paint brush threw up on a bunch of cubes.
