When @jimkeaty asked me to create a presentation for the @keatyrealestate team I immediately wanted to do something different. I was accustomed to just showing the type of content they could make with my team, or what new cool tools and services we provided. I would typically pair that with data that supported the “why” one should go ahead and “buy” into such a thing. With the landscape saturated with these data points coming from so many professionals throughout the industry, I took a step back and asked myself “why do you love it?”.
This question brought me back to my days in the early 2000’s at @fordhamuniversity where my professors, The resident Media Ecologists like @paullevins, @lance.strate, Arthur S. Hayes, and many others who gave me a different perspective on how mediums played such an integral part of how I viewed, interacted, and expressed myself within my environments. Those years with all of my teachers unveiled a purpose, a path, and ultimately a better way finder in pursuit of my passion: Visual Storytelling.
During my presentation I began discussing something that really stood with me from McLuhan’s “The Medium Is The Massage”. That technology is but an extension of ourselves. Yet, technology is usually thought of as our computers, smartphones, our “tech”. Yet McLuhan writes that clothes are an extension of our skin, the wheel is but an extension of our foot. A long time ago, these were technology that disrupted our way of life. Let's not forget language which he states: “It is the extension of man in speech that enables the intellect to detach itself from the vastly wider reality. Without language . . . human intelligence would have remained totally involved in the objects of its attention”.
Technology are vehicles for a “better” life. We are inundated with it, but if it were to be stripped away- it would all become pretty damn uncomfortable.
So I think we should slow down a bit, understand what is happening to us, and then utilize technology to do with it which what it was intended for - to make our life fruitful.

20 years later, I am a visual storyteller, utilizing the medium of “film” (or digital video, if you want to get technical) to help businesses, entrepreneurs, and artists communicate who they are, how they can help, and what they ultimately stand for within their community.
Understanding the mediums, understanding media, is where it starts for me. How does these mediums affect culture, society, and the individual. With this in mind I am able to better tailor the “content” to create a more effective outcome for my collaborators.
For my entrepreneurs out there, this series is about how I have come to view our media ecosystems, and my approach to communicating within said ecosystems.
