Cat, I would be curious to hear why you don't consider Django Unchained a western. As I'm sure you know there are many sub-genres with the western movie genre, such as Spaghetti westerns, Zapata westerns, revisionist westerns, horror westerns, etc. The plot of The Hateful Eight owes more of a debt to '50s/60s western TV shows.
