Read description details for what I should have put in the video in the first place!
A detailed guide for Elite Dangerous players wanting to jump in and fill up on their Encoded Materials.

Original process was taken from Down to Earth Astronomy's guide for scanning the Cave Johnson Science Vessel. The reason I made another video:
1) That original process basically requires the ship to be in an Anarchy system or you fight the cops.
2) My player group has some new folks that could use a very basic start-to-finish process.
Original D2EA video:

TLDR; if you want to scan a ship like this in a non-Anarchy system, just engage "Silent Running" before you fire the Recon Limpet and leave silent running active until the hack is completed. Nothing fancy, so if you know the rest of the process, skip watching :)
This started as a quick video (and the beginning is the most important part) and I didn't write a script out. If I had I'd have changed a couple things noted here.
a] If I redid the video I would focus less on Grade 5. The reason is that G5 materials aren't guaranteed on this run, just *possible*, and not all types [confirmed G5 drops here: Modified Embedded Firmware, Classified Scan Fragment, Peculiar Shield Frequency Data] . You can get a couple of different types (rows) of materials here and then trade them for others. Just don't trade for Adaptive Encryptors ... use the Jameson Wreck for that. Once you're starting to get a bunch of "no storage" messages and no materials at all from a scan, go trade materials.
b] When trading remember that trading in the same -row- costs the least. Trading a different row increases cost.
*Examples:*
... Trading down: 1x G5 mat for G4 mats on the same row gets 3x G4
... Trading down: 2x G5 from a *different* row gets **1x** G4
... Trading across: 6x G5 gets 1x G5 for a *different* row
... Trading up: 6x G4 mats gets 1x G5 from the same row
... Trading up: **36x** G4 mats gets 1x G5 from a *different* row
c] the trigger for getting attacked is the Science Vessel registering you when the limpet attaches and is hacking. You can disengage silent running while the authorities are scanning, as long as the limpet is done hacking.
d] if you get a bounty IN system, don't go to the station in system to pay them off. Went to a prison station twice for this (when testing what triggered the attack). Find an interstellar factor nearby (
https://inara.cz/galaxy-nearest-stations/) and pay there before going back to farm.

List of Science Vessels that -should- work (only tested on Cave Johnson so comment if some others don't work). This might help people who aren't close to Cave Johnson's current location as it moves every 3 weeks (but always to the same few systems). I haven't found a good way to search these directly on Inara so I used a combination of DuckDuckGo / Google + Inara. That process is shown in the video @ 00:05:13. All except the last should be near the main bubble. Last one is in Colonia.
