Much of the T that formed and obliterated the remnants of the IJN battleships, included 6 of the 8 ships of Battleship Row. They came back from the dead just to get revenge. Enterprise had plenty of wrath and vengeance. But many of those battleships from Pearl, especially Arizona’s sister, Pennsylvania, were eager for revenge.

If Taffy 3 had more destroyers and had their torpedoes hit too, they would have overwhelmed the center force

Another deceptive part of calling those battleships “old” is that several of them, had been basically completely rebuilt after Pearl Harbor, making them equal to more modern vessels in everything but speed.

The eight American cruisers fired a total of 3100 rounds of 6" and 8" shells at the approaching Japanese ships. There were 6 US battleships but the cruisers did most of the damage.

during this battle the united states navy used a tactic called crossing the t where they positioned themselves directly in front of the japanese line of ships making it to where the japanese ships could only use their gun turrets in the front part of the ships cutting their firepower in half while the us ships could deliver full broadsides

One thing that’s important to remember about Surigao Strait is that Nishimura had a pretty good idea of what he was up against and drove into it anyway. He’d sent up scout planes earlier in the day before the battle and they accurately reported the battle line and defences. He went ahead because he believed that the main force under Kurita needed a distraction for the main American force and he had to be that distraction. Coincidentally, the battle took place on the anniversary of the Charge of the Light Brigade - which had pretty much the same outcome that Surigao did.

What a great history story

Always love the propaganda videos too.
America: this 6 old battleships are the only thing that stands in Japan’s way.
Reality: Japan came in 2 separate groups with 2 old battleships, 4 cruisers, 8 destroyers. America ready and waiting with 6 old but modernized battleships, 8 cruisers, 28 destroyers, and 39 PT boats.

It was such a bad plan that even a regular history nerd like you and not a naval history buff like me can call it bad

Too add insult to injury, sailing towards a line of vessels like that means that the incoming enemy is "T'd up" or "Crossed up" - where the entire fore of their ship is facing the entire broadside of the awaiting enemy fleet. The Japanese couldn't use their guns even if they tried.

To be fair: they HAD to take that route for the plan to succeed.

Everyone’s meming the “only six battleships” line, but what about “last line of defense”?

“The Japanese got through torpedo boats and destroyers, meaning the only thing in their way are EVEN MORE POWERFUL SHIPS fresh and ready to fight.” That’s like saying you punched your way through a bunch of school children and teenagers, so now all you have to fight is a line of MMA experts.
