ОтветитьFrom the Upper Peninsula here, from what I can tell from the stories they didn't migrate here because of the climate. It's because the copper mining boom and nobody else would work such dangerous jobs and such a harsh climate except the Finns. They went where they could go en masse and have jobs waiting.

ОтветитьIf you wanna hear what American Savolax Finglish sounds like when sung, I recommend listening to Lännen Lokari (Western Logger) by Hiski Salomaa. Salomaa is arguably the most iconic American Finn. The song Lännen Lokari is the song people hear when think about American Finns, it's basically the Finnish American equivalent of Säkkijärven Polkka.
ОтветитьFinland isn't Scandinavian, but it is Nordic
ОтветитьA Finnish man was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, John Morton (Marttinen) - his family settled in New Sweden along the Delaware.
Finnish roots in America go back even further than their mass migration here. Beautiful people and a wonderful contribution to America!
My great-great grandparents were Finns from Ostrobothnia who settled in Thunder Bay, unfortunately the culture had pretty much disappeared past my grandfather's generation
