This Filipino Spot in Union City Left Me with Mixed Feelings

Today, I’m in Union City, California, visiting a Filipino restaurant called Tribu Grill, as part of my mission to showcase more East Bay Filipino food finds! Located in a bustling community plaza surrounded by well-known businesses, Tribu Grill has been on my radar, and I finally decided to stop by.

For this visit, I ordered Pinakbet, Bicol Express, and rice. The Bicol Express was flavorful and satisfying, but I had some concerns with the Pinakbet. Without the traditional alamang/bagoong (fermented shrimp paste), the dish lacked that depth and boldness of flavor I grew up loving. It’s a reminder of how key ingredients can make or break certain Filipino dishes.

While the restaurant has a welcoming vibe, my first impression wasn’t the best when it came to the overall taste. Still, I appreciate finding more Filipino spots in the East Bay and hope to return to try other dishes in the future. I hope you enjoy the video.
