Tita Ruffo doesn't sound as high on C4 because that's his passaggio note, baritones like Antonio Scotti and Lawrence Tibbett sound higher on C4 because it's their last passaggio note

Well I think for pop singing, voice type doesn’t really matter because it’s an operatic thing. in opera you sing without microphone. A baritone is expected to sing middle range with huge volume. I guess for non-operatic singing, it’s more about the range itself.

No. Definitely a tenor. Whoever says baritone doesn't know about voices. Thanks.

His falsetto singing in Exercises in Free Love is disregarded possibly due to falsetto is considered a function of regular range.

There's just nothing baritone about his voice. But I've also seen Barbra Streisand and Madonna categorized as mezzos, so yeah. 🙄

These comparisons with opera singers are flawed, because they are trained to use a different tone compared to pop/rock singers and that style of singing is harder in general. Operatic baritones can hit A4 and make it sound dark and massive, almost deep, even though it's at the top end of their range. Tenors can sing C5 and make it sound thick and not very high. Rock singers like Layne Staley sometimes sing A4 and make it sound super high and piercing. It's hard to determine Freddie's voice type based on those comparisons. I believe he is probably a baritone because you can hear a bit of that twangy tightness in his higher range like you hear from Chris Cornell and John Lennon, who I firmly believe are baritones.

Another indicator is if he really gets close to d2 in his speaking voice as you said. I don't think most tenors can speak that deep and if they can, they would really have to force it.

He was not a real tenor or even a baritone, he does not possess the lowest notes of the baritone and on stage he does not possess the high notes of a tenor. He moved on the low range of the tenor, which is why many call him a pushed tenor while others baritenor but the truth is that his voice is positioned halfway between the two vocal registers.

@jasonblack4208 This will be the only time I'll call your name on my channel, but I know you like videos discussing voice types a lot. I think you'll like this one :)

I would say low or middle-range tenor. No way he is a baritone.

There were studies made to analyse recordings of his voice, and they were clearly saying that he got a baritone voice. Aven Monserrat Caballé told him wheb they did their duet that he was a baritone according to her. I just think he expended his upper range a lot!.

Great video, I especially liked ho you used examples how Freddie's 4th octave notes sounds like notes in the middle of his register. That is some of the best proof! Great job!

Can you please make one on pre 2003 Serj tankian?, I want to know his voice type because people have been saying that he’s a baritone for years, that might be true but I still want to learn of his voice type.

Thanks for making some sense.
There is this tenorphobia on YT, which I find utterly missinformed: tenor voice is the most natural male voice, it just needs some depth and technique to be interesting.

Fake baritones are all over - same for "baritone followers". I even found some deafs claiming Michael Jackson was a baritone!

Comparing things in the studio to things live makes no sense. In the studio you can record more takes and you can hit higher notes because you can rehearse them as much as you want. The effort of a live show leads you to understand what your true range is and what your limits are. Freddie was a basic baritone with a light tone and who could play comfortably in the higher range. But live it can hardly go beyond an A4. It's a light baritone.
