Is because not all laptop have equal system some system can take only listed headphones not the microphone speaker some you need to see other videos why some show the got speak sign and headphones cause to the fact that some which certain system can use only specific gadget like if one type is can use headphones speaker some like gaming headphone that's one can use that's model laptop unless if one to go through the process of download system panel for like install into software cause it mind take a lot of doing understand if take other way part to trouble for speak cable jack use. 🎙️🎧

So if I were to use a usb headset and use a external mic and just plugged it in regularly would it work without any adapters or splitters?

Currently computer is 15 years old with Win 8.1 so I'm old school. Thinking about buying a ASUS Proart Studiobook 16 which had a headphone jack but I can't find a microphone jack on it. I'm not familiar with the USB to microphone setup. Maybe that's how their are expecting people to attach a microphone?

THANK YOU so much! I've been having this exact same problem and haven't been able to find any info on it. Bought several adapters and converters just like you, headphone audio works but external mic would not. Just ordered one of the USB adapters. Fingers crossed!

Even if I make the TRRS adapters work, for some reason the output signal crosses with the input signal so if you're monitoring the mic, it's gonna feedback real fast especially when using live effects (such as for guitar or vocals). Even when recording, the input will pickup the backing track along with the actual input. It's frustrating, I wish they still make seperate audio jacks more (though I'm not on a hunt for a new one).

You said you ended up only plugging in your mic into the USB to 3.5mm adaptor that plugged into the USB audio port and used your Bluetooth headphones, BUT you show you plugged in two things to the adaptor. What was the other thing??
I am having the opposite issue as you: my Rode VideoMicGo II shows up as a headset on the Rode Connect, and I test the mic and it appears it's recording, but I cannot hear any playback at all. I've checked the audio settings and I can hear everything else through my computer, but not that. I have my mic plugged into my laptop using the digital USB output provided with the mic.
i don't know that your adaptor is my issue; I cannot figure this out! It's so frustrating!

I wanna share that after I ordered a USB to 3.5mm audio adapter, I finally see my Boya lavalier mic in the System> Sound> Input Audio Device. Kudos to you! Guys this is the ONLY quick solution. No need to update sound drivers, etc. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!
