Collage is a scavenger’s medium.
Materials can include everything from paper to fabric, found objects with precision tools; to torn paper, shredded fabric, parchment to stamps, ephemera of a valuable, time honored variety, and various adhesives.

Finding the perfect elements for a collage emerge from a pile(s) of paper for me. Collages conjure up memories, personal jokes, often referring, informing and existing in unfinished or transient states, because they can survive, visually as preludes.

Collage is a medium of swiftness, change and often, surprise.
Each artist’s work is marked by individual iconography.
After a lifetime of experi-menting with collage, I now play with art history.

As awakening from a dream often leaves us in a state of peeling ourselves from one reality to another, collage often leaves the viewer wondering “what is in the background” or “is that Rembrandt’s face?”

The people from art textbooks become members of a family, characters in a drama, contemporary participants in mischievous deeds, various stages of emotions, worry or complete absurdity.

Chance factors into the work.
Daylight and environmental conditions seep in from Irish weather.
Individuals are often running to catch “transport” to an imaginary “settlement” – leaving one dystopian scenario for another where they must survive.

The viewer provides their own references.

The world around us gives cues.
