M2 MacBook Pro SSD DISASTER

The M architecture is SOC - System On a Chip, in other words the SSD is on the same fabrication as the cpu. That means that it is not possible to take "old" SSD chips and put them inside the M1 or M2 solution! YOu also can't compare a 256GB system with a 512GB or 1TB, as the larger memory units run the memory chips in RAID 0, which doubles the speed.

My MacBook Pro M2 24GB 1TB purchased 20/Aug/2022 gets 3000MB/s Write and 2700MB/s Read.

Let me give a PC guy's perspective for performance diff..
For more price, you are getting WD SN530 oppose to SN750 which you were getting last year..

Base model only. Still a disaster, but just the base model.

Inexcusable

Old M1 MBP have 2 128gb SSD for the 256gb configuration. That’s why it’s faster and the new M2 only have 1 256gb SSD that’s why it’s slow. 2 SSD will make the bandwidth faster, I got the 1TB M2 MBP and it have no speed issues for the SSD.

This is why I'm just going for the new M2 MacBook Air.

This difference in access speed is never going to be noticed by the typical M2 user. If anything you're only showing the best reason not to get any computer with only 256GB of storage.

I’m a big Apple fan, and have no skin in the game bc I don’t need a new MacBook, but it’s very disappointing that Apple is even selling this 13 in M2 MacBook “pro”.

Alex instead of RAIDing 2 128 GB NAND Apple chose to put in a single 256 GB NAND chip. I'm pretty sure this is why it's slower. I'm also guessing this will only show up on the entry level laptop. If you go anything above 256 GB the speed should be back to normal because those configurations will be RAIDed.

Thank you for your job. I am waiting for your full review on the m2 air if you are doing it. I need a portable laptop to code (use vms and docker) I travel a lot by train, battery life is really important. the M1pro with 32gb of is over 3000€ in France that's a lot of mone, so if the new air can do the job I'll buy it

This makes me think the M2 base model 256 GB MacBook Air available next month will also have the same single storage module. Definitely should be the first thing tested when they come out.

Maybe the new Mac os update will help fix the issue.

Blackmagic isn’t yet optimized for the M2. Could it be that the results are affected by that?

What is disgusting about the Fruit computer company is they had to know that this ssd configuration was going to be SLOWER than the x2 128 chips. And they shipped this not even noting this on their performance charts - absolutely insulting to consumers. If the Fruit ARM hardware is so weak that it cannot run well at the outrageous price they are charging for these things, then EVERY Fruit reviewer needs to bash the new Fruitbook Pro and the Fruit company needs to compensate its early adopters. It is outrageous that the Fruit company would ship essential a single core ssd that underperforms everything it has built in the last two years on writes and reads. It would be one thing had they disclosed this and if it had been on their LOWEST priced product, but the Fruit company intentionally installed this on a more PREMIUM product. Not every Fruit buyer is going to even be able to grasp the concept of channel ram. This is what you'd expect from a $500 Windows machine with a single stick of memory. I hope everyone who prepaid and ordered for one of these cancels and those who were conned by the Fruit company to get theirs on 6/24 pack up their garbage and sends it back for a refund. What a POS the Fruit company has offered.

Max Tech has shown this issue as well! Open both laptops and you will figure out why it's slower.

well yeah in the base model the SSD doesn't need to be ultra fast.... it is however still super fast compared to the upgraded models... want it to be 30% faster.... upgrade to the 512gb

Apple was raiding it's ssds for speed before, not anymore, they I believe do this on the iMac pro and I think not sure the Mac pro, I did not know they did it in laptops as well in some instances, what about the MacBook air.

Well that was disappointing… Alex, take the MBP back and tell them the SSD isn’t Pro. That’s 1/2 the speed of the MBAir you have… for the price they are asking this smells of bait and switch type games that used to get played 15-20 yrs ago… That’s a BAD Apple.

Apple does stuff like this all the time... that is why I am happy building my windows PCs from parts where I know what the correct performance rating of a part are! I don't really understand why people buy apple so much! They need to understand that apple is a boutique tech company.. makes pricey good looking stuff but the OS and underlying hardware is not up to the performance ratings. Build your own PC and fit your own hardware! that gives you mental peace!

m1 Macbook air was apple's mistake , they never thought it will blow there roof of, if they did, they would have never brought this beast alive.

The M2 MacBook Pro has one 256GB SSD module while the M1 MacBooks have two 128GB SSD modules to make the 256GB at the base model. The lower SSD speeds just show the actual speed of each module that Apple uses for their storage. If you get 512 GB or higher for the M2, the speeds will go back to the M1 high speeds.
