From the comments section it seems like a lot of people actually ENJOYED "black flag". It's my favorite AC game right after AC2. But for some reason, the hardcores were completely butthurt because Black flag did something DIFFERENT for a change. I got so bored with ONLY cities and climbing. The only difference between 3 games about part 3 were different city layout and new skins. THAT'S IT. I loved everything about black flag because we got to do something DIFFERENT. Idk why all the hate for THIS one and the one with the Indian kid.

This shanty, while it on the surface seems that the loved one of the singer died in a literal sense, I think his love died in a more sylbolic way, she was wearing a wedding dress, and a red rose, so My interpretation goes as follows
This sailor had a sweetheart in the mainland, and he went out with the fishing Vessels to earn their keep, one night, while the sailor was in one of his multi-day tripas he dreamed of his love and how she left him, why we won't know, maybe she felt abandoned, maybe she was pressured into it by her family, and so the dream was the last goodbye his love left for him, once he reached the land and found out what happened, he joined a bucaneer fleet, eventually ending up with us in the Jackdaw.

The thing about this song is that, for me, it played right after Blackbeard's death when you are forced to retreat and slowly sail off... it made it more tragic and emotional

Thank you, Ubisoft. No matter what people (including myself) say about AC, they're responsible for bringin' the past to present generations in a way no one could deliver. To think that this song is like a parchment in a bottle. That survived the test of time. They sang it before. We hear it now. Blissful!
