hmm. I agree with you in a way.. it makes your work much easier..
but more important than a super good monitor is the room acoustics!😉
if that sucks, even a $10,000 monitor can't sound good..
a monitor only sounds as good as your room acoustics!😎👊😉
I just got a pair of Kali IN8s. My first 3 way, where do these rank on your list?
ОтветитьHave you ever worked on some kii threes?
ОтветитьRoom treatment no.1, then monitoring. Im currently using neumann kh120 mkii. My mixes always translate well but because of their size im always contemplating an upgrade. Maybe pmc 6 or even atc 25a mkii. Thoughts?…
Ответитьdo u calibrate? if u do, do u use trinnov or sth else? do u have a house target for ur self?
ОтветитьI have pmc result 6 speakers and no matter what i do i cannot get a good sound from them. Spent thousands on room treatment, i have decent converters (rme ufx iii), and have made a million adjustments in placement and no matter what i cannot get rid of the speakers' huge boost at 130 and the cut at 2k. The boost in particular is so dramatic that corrective eq just kills the warmth and leaves them sounding cold, and orherwise they are extremely muddy.
I was thinking about switching to neumann 310s, but then i saw your vid on how much you love the pmc 6-2s. Plenty of folks seem to love the 6-2s, but they are a bit big for my room. Do you have any experience with regular pmc 6's? For the record, there are aspects of my result 6s i absolutely fucking love, like the stereo image, separation, and high end clarity.
Tl;dr neumann 310s or pmc 6?
Since I got my focal twins st6 all my music sounds more quality you can’t mix what you can’t hear 👂
ОтветитьDo you have any thoughts on Genelec 8330 (with SAM correction) vs Dynaudio LYD 7? Or, would I be better served to save up for PMC 6 (at $6K), Barefoot 01 (around $5K)? Music production/compossing is orchestra music with strong focus on strings. Thanks for your insight, and nice video.
ОтветитьHmm no mention of room acoustics that's no 1
ОтветитьYour Channel is really underrated 🔥
Ответитьit's funny you mentioned that because I was mixing on some Yamaha HS80m's and while mixing a harsh sounding vocal and come to the conclusion that is was the sound of the Tweeter that I was fighting, not the vocal itself. I love my Yamaha HS80m's monitors. I got lucky and got some free Event 2020 BAS. Hearing the difference and realized the cheaper but still great HS80m's was the reason my vocals didn't sound good with them. The distortion on the HSm's was too aggressive for the job. But to each their own, still gonna set them up when I have more room for them.
ОтветитьSoooo true, I started with room acoustics, then onto monitoring., and finally broke down and brought a vocal booth last year. Once you get those things squared away, it’s amazing how much faster you get things done, although I’m still learning, so still not fast enough.
ОтветитьHere´s my take on this topic/where I´m at with it. I fell into all the pitfalls with plugins and bad mixes constantly. Long story short, now I only use stock and a few free plugins for mixing and mastering, and I only use 150 dollar open back headphones for mixing and mastering. And here´s my point, I don´t do surgical EQing, (only hipass)! And I don´t reference my songs on the phone or in the car or any speakers because my channel strip that I came up with all on my own experimenting through years of trial and error ensures that I don´t fuck up anymore. It´s such a joy every time I play my music on different speakers because it sounds amazing! All in the box, just a 2012 macbook pro and my headphones, that´s it! (I don´t even have speakers) Matz Bearpath on Spotify, YT etc. So you know I´m not bullshitting. And, with only headphones, you don´t even need room treatment... Cheers!
ОтветитьSo trueee bro I got the CLA 10s their like the newer ns10s and I realized it was hard to make my mix sound good on them but when u do it’s magic 🫨
ОтветитьHave you ever used the Focal Alpha Twin Evo's?
I do agree mostly but I would say acoustics and a big enough room/space first, just my opinion.
What do you think about the pmc6 results?
ОтветитьGreat content brother - Speakers in a shit room is still shit though, which makes it the most important variable. I'm guessing youre operating under the assumption that your audience knows this, but they may not.
ОтветитьExcellent advice but with the same emphasis on acoustic room treatment!
ОтветитьAlmost agree. A pro studio is built around the speaker (its physics, precisely); so buy the speaker that you like in test listening anywhere, and double its price to have the real total starting budget incl. room treatment. Yes, speaker + room treatment. DSP room correction is the final ~20 % touch.
ОтветитьIm happy with my kali audio 8s and kali sub.. could i upgrade? Yes .. but im happy with what im able to hear
ОтветитьTook me 20 years to figure this out. I struggled with mid grade speakers for ever before finally getting something actually good and it changed everything. I wasted a ton of time and money chasing ghosts. Buy good speakers, learn how to treat a room. That's all you need.
ОтветитьI agree with you here I went down that buying gear road and it was addictive, but it wasn't needed, with that said I do have a pair of barefoot monitors, and they sound amazing, also I never really used a summing mixer which one would you recommend
ОтветитьVery true
ОтветитьGreat content so far. Just FYI, you have your 6-2s flipped. They are very clear in the user manual that the ports go on the inside and the woofers on the outside.
Ответитьwhat speakers do you have?
ОтветитьHeadphones>monitors
ОтветитьI’d also add that imo the most important thing to invest in is yourself.
If that means buying courses or studying or just trail and error, it will be worth it.
The gear doesn’t matter as much if you or the source can’t make use of it.
An example would be me ig, I heard over and over again that hardware synths were better than software and while I had used hardware before, I wasn’t satisfied so I decided to get a new hardware synth just to realise that it was definitely fun but my skill level wasn’t there and I just got better results with software. And I as a person had different needs than others. Because while people were saying software was too much and distracting, I found the opposite to be true for me.
Long story short invest time and potentially money into yourself and your skills and experiences before making any big purchases
In my experience
Hey Rayne i think a video about acoustic treatment is due, because alot of ppl dealing with little to no acoustic treatment in there home studios, I think great to decent monitors in an untreated room is just as counterproductive.
ОтветитьWhere can I hear your mixes?
ОтветитьYou’re absolutely correct my friend.
ОтветитьMost important is room acoustic and then monitors. Period. If Your acoustics sucks your monitors won't help. If your acoustic is great, you can mix on cheapest PMC and get great results.
ОтветитьDon’t spend money on better speakers if your room isn’t treated.
ОтветитьI’ve had the SAME experience. When I moved to my atcs I started using a lot less outboard, and very selected and very specific. I could get away with whatever plugin basically, now that I can hear
ОтветитьThank you so much for making such an informative video that breaks down this information for me. As a young, up-and-coming artist, it really helps me out!🙏
ОтветитьGood info. People need to watch mor of your videos
ОтветитьHonestly when I saw the preview I was 100% sure you would talk about acoustic treatment😮 THE ROOM🗣️🔊
ОтветитьDon’t forget to treat your room too gang! Room treatment is a given but for those who don’t know, even a little goes a long way! 🙏
