DERBYSHIRE DALES PARISH #11: CROMFORD

Cromford – “Crooked Ford”

Time and time again on this channel we have been to places which were built thanks to the Industrial Revolution. However, Cromford in the Derbyshire Dales can claim to be the birthplace of the entire Industrial Revolution. Cromford is a fine example of an early factory village, remaining largely unaltered since the late 18th Century. That along gives it an unrivalled attraction for the tourist. Many who visit come to see the world famous Cromford Mills, a recorgnised World Heritage Site no less.

Before the days of Sir Richard Arkwright who built the mills this place is famous for, this was a scattered settlement stretching from River Derwent to the top of Cromford Hill. The main industrial activity was lead mining and smelting. It was first mentioned in the Domesday Book as Crumforde, and was recorded as a berewick or supporting farm of Wirksworth. The place was transformed by the Arkwright. He built his first watered powered cotton spinning mill here in 1771, quickly followed by a second mill in 1776. His ventures required a large workforce so houses were added to attract workers to the village. He also built the Greyhound Hotel and established a market.

Today it has a variety of shops, including the famous Scarthin Books, opposite the Greyhound Pond. History? I’ll say. Let’s go see it all!
