My mom hates black cats because she's actually had bad experiences with them including during Halloween. She told me I can't get a black cat. Then I realized when I move out I'm going to be hours away from her and she won't need to know. Just because you have a family member that hates them doesn't mean you have to.

I've heard of people in the 21st century who actually believe cats will suck the breath of babies.

I have 2. Dexter who is 14 and Spencer who is 7 and the biggest cat Ive ever had, and he's one of the most active too.

I have a 10-year-old black cat that completely disproves myths 4 and 5. I named him Gremlin because he's quite mischievous, but he is very friendly, even with strangers, and I have tons of photos of him that turned out well. The only times he doesn't photograph well are when he won't sit still, lol. The other three myths I just don't believe, especially since 1 and 2 are somewhat contradictory.

Edit: just adding in that I also adopted Gremlin 3 days before Halloween... he's my Halloween baby!

In my experience they are the most timid cats, most cats will come up to me but black cats really shy away by comparison, immediately hiding under cars or bushes at least in my experience

We need to stop thinking ANYTHING BLACK is bad!

That purring sound in every single video is nice. There have been times my head was hurting before I started watching anything here, and the few seconds of purring was mildly soothing. Even a digital purr is good, apparently. Best sound in the world, and all you need to get it is make a nice little cat happy.

My black cat his name is Jack. Today is his 9th birthday!!! He is so playful and chatty a talks back a lot. He’s a little timid when it comes to having guests over but he does come around to say hi (eventually). He is the sweetest boy who comes and asks for cuddles often and begs for food like a dog. I guess he learned a thing or two from his late doggy brother Cody who practically ‘showed him the ropes’ around the house .. so I am not surprised at how smart he is. He has a good personality as well. He even points at the door with his paw to ask for outside (we live in a building, so the hallway is as far as I let him go) but he loves being out there just sitting outside the door, guarding the hall. He gets into everything. Wants to see what you’re doing and smell what you’re eating all the time.. he’s just a silly little guy and he’s super funny when he gets the Zumiez after the poops .. 😅 or the tantrums he pulls when we don’t let him out in the hallway, he rolls on the ground and meows with such drama like his life is over lol it’s so funny ! My black kitten is beyond affectionate. She already does well with strangers, has already made biscuits on me, and sleeps in my bed with me every night.

I have 2 black lovely kitties. I'm not exaggerating when I say the eldest saved my life during one of my worst moments. Both of them are very affectionate and attached to me and only me. ❤ When a third one appeared in my doorstep, it was very easy to find him a loving home because, also, he is very loving and social.

A similiar association between black cats and witchcraft, though in a more positive way, is in Studio Ghibli animie by Hayao Miyaazaki Kiki's Delivery Service, where the main character, a young witch student named Kiki, have a black cat named Jiji (in the english dub voiced by late Phil Hartman, best known for vocing characters on The Simpsons) who talks to her in over half of the movie making snarky remarks and reprimends Kiki for doing stuff she shouldn't, such as just run over the street. Though depicted as a witch, Kiki is not the evil type of withc from medieval belives but as the type that does good, like her mom makes potions for healing (one for an old lady's rheumatism). She also enconters another witch student near the start who practices fortune telling (which is more akin to japanese folklore about witches, the Uranai, for example Uranai Baba in the Dragon Ball anime, though she's more of a mean and greedy witch).

When it comes to the myths of black cats, I just cast them off as superstitions as they are no different from cats of other colors (though, I like other colos more, black is not bad or ugly in my eyes, they are at least better than hairless cats as I'm not too fond of them).

2nd - I am a practicing witch, and I believe that all animals are equally special despite their color. My wife and I adopted many feral and abandoned cats. They all brought calmness and peace to me. My feral Siamese became my lap-cat and my familiar. It was the most gut-wrenching time when we had to give our furbabies up for adoption when we were forced into homelessness. When we asked, we discovered that the formerly feral cat was charming and was the first to be adopted.

I loved my longhair black cat that I had for 17 years, was so talkative, after he passes away now have a orange & white kitty 🥰🤗😻😺

My cat son Ninja is solid black with medium length luxurious fur and yellow green eyes. He is the best little dude ever! Super affectionate in the mornings and during lap naps where he cat-traps me on the couch! I taught him tricks like Shake, Roll Over, Turn Around, etc. He is super smart and VERY good-motivated. He loves chasing lizards on our supervised outdoor walks, and keeps our home free of flies (aka “sky raisins”). He is definitely one of my reasons for staying on planet during this crazy time!!!

The Japanese believe the opposite, black cats are harbingers of fortune and happiness thus you will often see one facing the front door with 1 or 2 front paws greeting you.

I had a black cat for 22 years. She died many years ago and I have had 3 cats since, all of whom I loved. However Spooky was such a special cat who helped me get through a really hard time. Not a week goes past without me thinkiing about her and at times talking to her. I love her dearly.

I've had a black cat when I was kid and not once have she gave me any bad luck whatsoever. She was so friendly to me and anyone else. I miss her still.

I have 2 black cat sisters from the same litter, Kazari and Zaria. They have completely different personalities but both have their affectionent moments (I'm typing this with Zaria on my lap). I wouldn't give them up for anything.

I always heard that if a black cat crossed your path, it was bad luck. In my experience of six black cats (and counting), if a black cat crosses your path, she wants breakfast.

Black cats are not the "the majority of cats in shelters" in my experience. Did you mean over represented?

My all black Morpheus was recovered as a stray in a New England February 6 years ago. The shelter got his health and maybe half of his weight back before he hopped in my daughter's lap on first meeting. He's been a joy ever since - affectionate and confident.

I have 5. They were all rescues that were "dumped" in the town I live in. We are not very far from a city and people tend to bring them out here and release them. Anyway they are all awesome critters. All with very different personalities.

My teenage best friend was a small fluffy black cat. She is the cat in my profile photo. We called her Moufle.
My family and I adopted her from a Swiss barn, when I was 12. She was a bit wild and the runt of the litter, but she lives a happy 15 years with us. She absolutely loved having her belly rubbed! ❤ She would head Bonk me very hard and rub her nose on my face every time she came to see me. She also loved very much when I would get out of the house with her and take a stroll around the wilderness. She had her own chair at the table because she wanted to be a part of the family at Dinner!
We had to say goodbye to her 3years ago, due to a big tumor in her digestive track. 💔 This was the worst moment of my life. I couldn’t be with her since she still lived with my parents in the US and I’m now living in my hometown in Canada during the pandemic!

Some of my friends gave me a tabby kitty a few months later, who needed a home. While I love her too, it took me awhile to accept her since I was still grieving. Also the way she showed affection was very different! There is no head Bonk with her… We’re good now though!❤

I've always tried to adopt black cats at shelters. My first cat was a semi long haired cat called Magic. She'd disappear and reappear a lot, so it was fitting calling her Magic. She was my shadow. Sadly, she passed away at 8 yrs old due to stomach cancer. I still miss her... 😔
My current cat Luna is a tuxedo black on top with white along her belly and white socks. She's so adorable, and it's crazy how different cats' personalities are. She is also very much my shadow 😊

I adore my little black kitty Sassy. She is so smart and her eyes are so expressive you know what she is thinking!

I personally know two black cats my son's cat, Miss Mittens, is black and white, and my niece's cat, Jenny, is a beautiful black cat. I met Jenny last year she's a sweet little girl. Miss Mittens is my grandcat she's really goofy and acts like a 1 year old instead of a 16 teen year old

The sweetest cat I knew was a black one, he belonged to my parents. In the last town we lived in there was a very friendly black cat that would come over to say hi to me n my dog whenever they saw us. At the shop over the last two years we were there was a black Scottish fold who was sweet n fairly friendly too. 🥰💖

My boy Otis is one of the best cats I have ever had. He chose me at the shelter. Makes me wish I had gotten a black cat sooner. The only ones who could say he is demonic are my Tuxie girls who he chases around the house.

I never belived a word of these myths, (expect the good luck one,I love that one) I had a black cat for 17 years,he was scared of everything,he was abandoned in a bush next door to us (some idiot drove off) when he was a kitten,so we have no idea why he was scared of everything (plus he was a indoor cat,he was safe and sound at all times)

My black girl has long gone over the Rainbow Bridge but she was a Persian and named Hecate (obviously). She was wierd but I'll love her forever.

I've had cats all my life of all colors and patterns and I loved them all to pieces - but my little Tuketu looks just like the first kitty in this video and he'll be 16 on Oct. 27 (National Black Cat day incase black cat lovers didn't know) and I couldn't love him more if I tried. I have had many Black Cats in my life and have found that they are just as loving and easy to live with as my other cats. I have known people that had the miss liking of Black Cats and I tell them it is their good luck if they get over the false stories of Black Cats. To have and learn more in person of the Black Cats.
