Hello Mr. Carey. I notice you have a video covering the topic of writing an Artists Statement. However, I can't see any videos covering how to write an artists biography. If you haven't already covered that, I think many artists would benefit from learning how to put together a professional artists biography. Really found your videos helpful by the way! Thank you. :)

Thank you for your challenge call, I called three galleries, one said they don’t need new art work, one said they need, email to them but it for next year, the third one they said they don’t accept unsolicited artist, and I asked how the emerging artist could have chance to show their work without solicit, and then the lady said you can email to us, at that day night time I wrote my first email very seriously for your rule, until now I have no reply from them, I will keep email them and find gallery to get involved!

Love this. I'm interested to know how this has changed during COVID? How have artists found approaching galleries during this moment in history?...sometimes I wonder if galleries are the best strategy, but I suppose it all depends on the city you live in, the type of art you create etc.

I really really enjoyed this video and accepted the challenge! I don’t know entirely what the end results will be, but I thought I would share the results, so far, with everyone.

I reached out to 12 Galleries and followed the suggestions in this video. Results:

-7 YES. (5 were yes and 2 were ‘not really but send your work anyway’.. which I’m counting as a yes)
-1 NO.
-4 UNCLEAR. I haven’t heard back from yet. I either tried to call them multiple times and inevitably left a message or emailed them per their request.

I don’t know what’s going to happen but hopefully some thing! If not, I’ll just do it again elsewhere. And again. And again.

Thanks for the video, Mr. Carey!

Hi Brainard, I first did this (but going in person)before knowing about you. I have since gone (IN PERSON!) to 20 galleries in NYC and have asked them according to your guidelines (some even during openings). One gallery said (after submitting) maybe in the possible future, but the gallery director and I do keep in touch. I approached one BIG Gallery in Chelsea; by luck, at the front desk, I actually spoke to the director (it was the opening that night and I couldn't go that evening so I went during the day). Anyway, I've been so jaded that I already said to the director: how does one get looked at from an established gallery like yours? To my shock, the director said that all galleries should look at submissions as a public service! So she welcomed my submission! This actually happened to me at a bonafide Blue Chip Gallery. I went right up to the owner, who is pretty famous in the art world. To my utter shock, the owner was happy to look at my submission and gave me a personal email! He since declined, but was sure I would find a gallery. Since then, I have spoken to him at 2 openings and we have nice chats. This seems like networking to me. I've only been doing this since December, really. I have so many stories to share. I'd be happy to do so for your class if you're interested.
