Hi this is Greg Ellis, the rhythmic half of Vas. I wanted to help answer the
question of the language Azam is singing in. The fact is is that it is
her own language comprised of phonetics similar to Hindi, Farsi (her
native language)and elements of Sanskrit. But she also wrote all her
"lyrics" out spending weeks sometimes getting them just right. She never
improvised anything. The concept for us was that I was using percussion
from around the world but not playing traditionally. Essentially my own
language as well. That's why the music can't ever be pinned down to a
specific geographical location. It was fully intended by us to create
music that transcended language and cultural barriers. Hope that helps!

A woman called Fran in South Africa introduced me to VAS in 1998. She was a philosophy teacher at uni, and we listened to Vas as well as Dead Can Dance while I painted a leopard for her. Her home was so spiritually clean that it created the most amazing atmosphere to work in. Super memories of painting while looking over the ocean at lightening in the distance.
