Really this show is just a continuation of Levinson and Rev's previous film Assassination Nation. Not even mentioning that film here is pretty weird seeing as how it is literally the jumping off point for every single idea explored in Euphoria both visually and thematically. I don't wanna say someone didn't do their homework but it sorta looks like some one didn't do their homework

I really appreciate modern showrunners changing the visual landscape of TV series, but man, Euphoria was just too much for me.

Extreme shallow depth of field throughout the season took me back to the days when people started making videos on their 5DMk2's with 50 1.4s/1.2s wide open to make it look "cinematic", although I give a huge round of applause to the focus pullers on the show. Constant crazy camera moves and overly saturated RGB lighting was so overdone to my taste that at some point it lost any dramatic meaning. Like a loooong fashion commercial.

Sometimes it makes me think that using LF cameras and shooting wide open has become a way for modern TV shows to skip out a bit on production design and meticulous shot composition, as Euphoria is by far not the only one using that.

Also, slightly off the topic, being someone from a less developed country and born in '92, I found it extremely hard to empathise with eternally coke sniffing jacked up "teens". If anyone feels similarly, I highly recommend watching a much less popular Irish HULU series Normal People directed by Lenny Abrahmson and lensed by Suzie Lavelle, BSC. Really takes a 180 perspective on the subject of troublesome coming of age.

VERY good video, thank you. But an interesting one as it’s never felt like ~emotional realism over realism~ was solely up to the cinematography in film/TV. Certainly in paintings that’s different, but Euphoria often felt so heightened ALL the time in the way it looked. The “elevation” was happening at story points that weren’t even emotional, as if they were just hoping to create a “new realism” rather than focus on emotional realism. It seems that emotional realism can be achieved in so many other ways than just lighting and camerawork but that may be a discussion that includes the directing and definitely the writing as well

The show is highly unrealistic and its story is mostly crap, but the soundtrack, oh, oh my god.

The only problem with hollywood is camera moves without a reason and most of time its all over if you want to really see aesthetic camera movement check kurosawa work.
