Welcome to another video by Feeding Concepts, Inc. In today’s video, we will be explaining how to adjust tuning on a vibratory feeder bowl. The bowl we are working on in this video is a standard unit (also known as a superior unit). This type of bowl is very standard in the vibratory feeder bowl industry
If you have a bowl that’s been out in the field for a while and you notice that it has started to slow down, most likely it has work hardened and it has gone over-tuned. Basically, that means that the springs have stiffened up over time.
To tell if the unit has been over-tuned or not is to loosen the two bolts at the bottom of the spring while the unit is running and see if the unit starts to run faster. If the bowl speeds up then that means you are over-tuned and you need to take some springs off. On the other hand, if the bowl slows down when you loosen the bolts, then that means the unit is under-tuned and you need to add springs
Typically, there are two ways that employees in the feeder industry tune the bowls before they leave their facility. They will either over-tune it or under-tune it. Here at Feeding Concepts, we send our feeder systems out a little under-tuned so as the springs work harden, the unit will speed up gradually and that way the customers can take the springs off as needed.
The first step in tuning the unit is to use a cheater bar to loosen a bolt from the top and bottom of the spring pack and determine if the unit is over or under tuned. The unit we are working on in the video is under-tuned, so you’ll hear the unit slow down when we loosen the two bolts. The tuning is in a perfect position because it’s just under-tuned.
To remove the spring pack, you want to completely loosen all four bolts. When it’s off, add or subtract a spring as needed for your specific unit. It’s important to have spacers in between each spring so it allows the springs to move. When finished, place the spring pack back on the unit and tighten the bolts back. A good tip for bowl tuning is to make sure every single bolt on the unit is as tight as possible. You’ll notice that once the bolts are on the unit tight, it will start to speed up and power will be restored to the unit.
