Older chimp Sally takes baby Jeff for mum ZeeZee's back and takes him for a leisurely walk to the far side of Chester Zoo's Chimp Island. Mum ZeeZee follows on and walks back to the chimp house with baby.
Sally is just the best babysitter, a kind and caring chimp who loves to be around the young chimps in the chimpanzee troop. She especially loves to help care for new baby Jeff and carry the tiny baby chimp around, giving Zeezee a helping hand caring for baby and developing her own maternal skills in the process.
New Mum Zeezee is often seen allowing Sally, a non directly related Female, take her baby chimp from her to Carry around. However although Sally is a trusted female chimp, Zeezee is never too far away from baby and often follows them around, and when she want the baby back she does so without any resistance from Sally.
Zeezee and baby Jeff and the majority of the chimps at chester zoo are Western Chimpanzees - the World's Rarest Chimpanzee subspecies
which is listed as a critically endangered species
Baby Jeff born in December 2022 is so special and an important addition to the chester zoo troop, adding security to the survival of this magnificent species of Great Ape
In this video Sally is well trusted to take Jeff for short periods of time. Sally is not a directly related chimpanzee to Zeezee and Jeff but is indirectly related and has a strong bond with the new mum and her offspring.
Zeezee is an experienced mum and has had other offspring born at the world famous zoo, including Stevie, big sister to little chimp Jeff.
Mum Chimp Zeezee has so much trust in Sally but she doesn't allow any female to hold her baby, just her direct relatives and trusted females of whom she has a close bond or trust. Many other chimps in the troop, watch out for the new baby chimp and the other chimp youngsters in the chimp family at Chester Zoo which now totals 23 members comprising of 8 Males and 15 Females (as of January 2023)

The New Baby Chimp is the first Male Baby chimpanzee to be born at the zoo since Carlos in 2005, the last 3 babies born since 2019 have all been female
Baby Chimp Jeff was born on 9th December 2022 and spent the first few weeks bonding with the Chester Zoo chimp troop
Chester Zoo announced the baby chimps birth on social media 11th January 2023 and later on 17th January 2023 announced that his name is Jeff, named in tribute to Jeff Beck British Rock Guitarist.
This is also in keeping with the zoo tradition of naming baby chimps after iconic pop and Rock Music legends
