Interesting discussion of China's economic problems. A couple of very questionable conclusioins, though: the reason government agencies have outdated IT systems is that Congress has refused to pay for upgrades, perhaps because they do not want government to be successful. And to say that Trump and Musk are not in it for the money strikes me as hopelessly naive. Trump's actions in his first term showed that he was most definitely in it to enrich himself: goverment revenue is a major source for Space X and Tesla is highly dependent on EV tax credits.

it is one thing to say US is doing all the research and the rest of the world take the benefit without paying, it is another matter that US is simply prints dollar and rest of the world pays US spending's by using US dollar in trade and by buying US bonds. In the end, US is getting paid for all those research by the rest of the world by virtue of the fact that US dollar is the universal currency and there is nothing to to stop US to print more and keep increasing the debt. Virtually US is given a blank check by the world so that they can do anything they like, including bullying others.

To use fentanyl as an excuse of adding tariff against Canada is absurd.

To use tariffs against China to compensate for low sales tax in the US is absurd. Why not increase sales tax in the US, it could be used to lower the deficit, thereby lower the growth in debt.
To argue that Australia would be a good place to produce pharmaceutical is absurd, why not produce it in the US, then regardless who the US go to war - you'll still have to access to pharmaceuticals.

There's a certain level of self-serving B.S. going on here. I did a search of Lyric Hughes Hale and was unable to find if she speaks Mandarin or gets all her Chinese info second hand. Having lived and worked in China for two years, I assure you that language skills are important for an understanding of the subtleties.
Also, I find the argument made by Trump about Canada and US defence costs disingenuous. Canada has never posed a threat to the States; so the supposed "cost of defending" Canada is easily offset but the reduced cost of needing to defend a 4000 or so mile border against a less amicable country don't you think?
There's more, but I think this might not be an audience all that open to looking at the "Layers of Engagement" in such discourse.

Tariffs is a consumption tax, is there a reason that these talking heads will not be truthful and call it what it is. Nothing but a tax. It’s laughable to suggest that Fentanyl is coming from southern and northern boarders but not actually being produced in the USA itself. The very same ingredients to make Fentanyl imported into Canada and Mexico are also being imported from China into the USA. FACT, there is more Fentanyl being exported into Canada from the US or through the US into Canada than from any other country. Fentanyl is an excuse with no merit, as a way to justify tariffs (not just on Canada but all US trading partners) to raise funds to pay for promised tax cuts. That includes the slash and burn approach by DOGE to reduce bureaucracy. No problem. Canada and other trading partners may suffer a bit of short term pain, but in the process are diversifying our economies, establishing new trading relationships and creating a more resilient and competitive nation. The wages are quite comparable in Canada, unlike Mexico.

I'm a retired engineer, state worker, school teacher, team plan operator. Try to take jobs in the private sector, mixing paint, moving car parts. Couldn't do it, wouldn't do it at $11 an hour.

Did you really bring up community colleges? I worked at a community college as a professor, adjunct stuff. Did you really forget to bring up welders and machinists? Electricians? Reflection of the fact that you might have worked in car parts, but you might not know much about work.
