BEST of MARGIN CALL #2 - Searching for Eric Dale & Sam meets with Will

The theme which resonated most with me is the idea that MDs and heads of divisions know nothing about the day-to-day work of analysts and associates within their division. I was an analyst and also an associate with Barclays from 2002-2008 before moving and can honestly say my MD had no clue about what I did on a daily basis, he could barely make sense of the charts and models I used.

Another great scene, “E-mail to me.”; “I don’t think that would be a good idea. [We know are email servers not well secured.]” Another great conversation on trading limits. They breached trading limits several times. No management action triggers and no escalation protocols. Failure of risk management.

Such an incredibly underrated movie. Al the actors brought their “A” game. Just a joy to watch and right in target for our financial system!

And a lot of people like to compare this with "The Big Short", but I don't think it's even the same type of movie... This one is much more mundane, and at the same time, more gritty. I love both, but if I had to choose, I think I prefer this one.

Why is it in movies, people can drink for hours, but they don't slur their speech, or lose their mental sharpness... hilarious.

I felt a little bad for Seth but after seeing the full movie (free on Peacock) it was clear that he needed to go - he was way too fascinated with compensation.

It was also more clear how big of a snake Jared was.

The number of times the higher ups murmur "We talked about this." In this film Is such a tell to how this got so bad to begin with and the lack of accountability each one of them takes in it all.

I absolutely love this movie but what I cannot figure out is since Eric Dale was working on these number patterns, if he saw a problem why didn’t he bring it up with the company?

Silly as it sounds the " I don't think that would be a good idea....I'm on my way" bit, is the best part of the movie, it';s one of those great little moments ( of which this movie has many) when he realises without actually saying it, oh shit this is serious,

Every single goddamn line in this movie is just ooozing with personality and purpose. Even the lines from Seth about how much people make establish points of relation in terms of wealth and the idea that to guys like Seth, all they can think about is money.

They fantasize about it, so much that quarter of a million a year is not enough. They are always looking at the guy who is making more, and that is how they are capable of making decisions that affect the entire world for the worse

Brilliant. The refusal to put it in an email transmits the urgency and sensitivity of the problem. Class writing.

Interesting how one of the higher ups of the company says "You know I can't read these. Speak to me in English" when shown data on their company. Really goes to show what some of the CEOS and big wigs on the company ladders are.

Great film... But Will's accent!! What the hell is that? Weirdest concoction English by way of Dutch, Afrikaans, Ozzie, Cockney and all delivered through his nasal passage. Or is it just me🤣

I love how they never show the models, charts, figures, etc. Just the reactions of the people, the audience is never brought into their world, always remaining outside like watching animals in a zoo. Best part is that you can tell by the brilliant acting that some of the people are pretending to grasp the totality of the situation - so many of them are indeed just betting against the other jock around the world.

Eric dale definitely deserved firing, he had the same data as his underling and he still didn’t join the dots, his underling had it for two hours after work and he solved it, a total incompetent.

The way Peter said “I noticed that about you” and “you do know it’s a little more complicated” makes him sound pretty douchey

The only think I find unrealistic about this movie is that they apparently all know the telefone numbers from memory and start dialing even if they don´t even know their name!😆

The genius of the movie is that as it progresses, the problem gets graduated to higher ranks, AND, the higher the rank, the less they understand the topic: the first guy wants to be told the numbers, the second guy wants to be "spoken in English", the last guy wants to be spoken to "as if he was a Labrador"
