I compare this movie to the 1946 movie classic "The Best Years of Our Lives" which won 7 academy awards that year including best picture. The story lines in both movies have to do with returning veteran soldiers from war and their struggles to adjust to civilian life'. I think every American should see these two films. The acting in both films are just absolutely brilliant. I watch these two classic films every chance I get, and I never get tired of watching 'em.

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!

I've never been in war (I'm 58)--just missed being eligible for Viet Nam--but both this and TBYOOL are films that I also can watch over and over again. I still find myself just sobbing during both of them--and I'm not a sentimental guy... I find your connection between these films excellent (and one I was never consciously aware of)--with one area you missed: the music in both films is brilliant and strongly adds to their emotional impact.

de niro's acting was far better, i dont like to compare usually but some idiot below mentioned that ed harris was better and all that, ed harris is a fine actor but he's no robert de niro. period.

As a Vietnam veteran, this may be the best movie about the after effects of war I've ever seen. I think everyone in the cast should have at the least received Academy Award nominations, and the movie for Best Movie. I also think that Ed Harris gave the performance of his life. De Niro was his usual excellent self, but Harris went a step beyond.

when this movie  was made I lived in the second yellow house on the street . I got the honor to shake Robert de niro  katty baker and ed harris hands I go up to castle craig once in a while and its so cool to remember the movie my uncles were in that war I remember what they went thru my ex husband had a very hard time with the mermory of that war it was a  horrblie war no need for that war but  it was a very good movie .

Weird to see Ed Harris with a bit of weight on him.

I remember this movie being shot in my home town when I was a teenager. It was a big deal and they used a LOT of locals as extras. Even in this trailer, I pretty much knew almost every location. It made me homesick.

VERY VERY UNDERRATED MOVIE, very good performance by De Niro, the best performance by Ed Harris, ans Kathy Baker great to, and the music is beautiful !!!

Ed harris excellent underrated underrated performance, he was nominated for a golden globe, but he was robbed at the Oscar. Also De Niro and the movie itself. It’s like deer hunter a bit. I think is so underrated this movie. And also 1989 was a an excellent year for Ed Harris, jacknife & the Abyss😍 🔥
