hes not one of the greatest antagonists ever. bro barely has lines and is only compelling because of his cool design and mystery. hes barely even fleshed out as a character & only becomes interesting after the show in the manga. everyone always wants to make this character seem so deep. killua or kurapika are so much deeper than chrollo

You mentioned you weren’t sure about chrollos religious symbolism. Thought I’d mention the chrollo and the phantom troupe is meant to symbolize Jesus and the 12 apostles. With chrollo being Jesus and Hisoka being Judas. Hisoka being the one who betrays chrollo just like how Judas betrayed Jesus. One of my personal favorite symbolisms in HxH

If you ask me personally i would say the best "villain" I've ever seen is probably adam from lord of the mysteries since he is so well written even though he only appears in only a few chapters but his impact and plot twists are the biggest in the WHOLE story

I'm hoping they do more with his character later in the series bc I'm not convinced. Someone asks you why you kill people and you just go "never rlly thought about, I'll probs go think about it" how is that good writing XD haha. Especially since he says it in a way more overcomplicated and nonsensical way than that lol. It's not interesting to be edgy, unless the edge has a contextual relevance in the story or in that character's arc. Another thing that had no context was the love for his comrades, which was a bit interesting and had some depth/emotion. Still wasn't explained. Maybe a tiny bit with some stilted flashbacks, but those didn't have emotional weight, for example in contrast to Gon and Killua's friendship. No shade bc there are other aspects/characters that're well written in this show (haven't read it) Not a compelling antagonist in the slightest though haha

He’s got a stunning lack of adaptability as seen in his fight vs Zeno where he was running in circles with a mantle like a lap dog, and is very bland and shallow his and Gon’s convo is the definition of fake deep, seeing it being featured here made me laugh. Hisoka, despite not being as closeted, is so much more complex and interesting, hell even the one week old Meriem is better.

If this was “Why Chrollo is one of the better antagonists in HxH” then yeah sure. But he’s not even T5 in his own show and that’s saying something.

Hes selfless, meaning there is no self and attained enlightenment. Nothing he did got any meaning cause life itself is meaningless. The group was formed just for them to help eachothers and just to survive

Chrolo is so intriguing because as he said he has his own philosophy and values, he is unpredictable and so unique , no one is like him. You are so interested in what is his goal or purpose plus he is so cool and pretty

“Is that the key to understanding myself” is basically the entire point of the whole show in my opinion. It’s a beautiful notion, that an antagonist so embroiled in evil acts has the slightest amount of remorse while also having so much conviction. He’s almost more layered than kurapika and that’s saying a lot.
