Friday night the winds started up over 30mph then all day Saturday 40+ mph wind with 75mph gusts. They said it knocked down some power lines which started the fire. I could see the giant cloud of black smoke 30 miles west in Williston ND. Hopefully they can gain control of the fire with the winds dying down and get it put out.

I live in north-central South Dakota, about 25 miles from North Dakota. We do soil sampling, driving through fields to get samples. Yesterday we called off work to make sure something like this didn’t happen. Virtually all of the Dakotas and Western Minnesota are in a Red Flag Alert right now with high winds.

Too bad FEMA broke now. Sorry ND.

I'm from the area, raised west of this fire. These fires look terrible, but they burn through quickly. They run out of fuel and die in the low fuel areas or when they come to a waterway. The Missouri river, as well as several tributaries run right through the area. Not a big thing to the old school locals

Wildland fire fighter. That high wind would even make fighting that fire very dangerous for experienced firefighters. Would not take much for even a fire crew to get entrapped by fire with the hot spotting that would occur from that wind carrying hot embers miles from fire front igniting new fire ahead of the main fire line. And dead grass that fire would move very fast. You could not out run that fire on foot for sure.
