Love your content, and I don't even disagree with your points. That said, I love this movie and I find it funny but it's mostly because of Debbie and Pete and the kids.

A very common problem with Apatow movies is that they’re too long!! Learn to make a 90 minute movie sir

I know that may not have been the "discourse", but in my eyes, the pair was baffling not because she's gorgeous and he's fat, but because they have nothing in common? He's a manchild with no redeeming qualities. He doesn't come off as charming and we see she doesn't find him funny. He's not particularly kind or smart or driven or successful, and that's the fault of the script. The movie only shows us his worst characteristics (and hers, too, by the way). Why are we supposed to want them to end up together? Adam Sandler's movies are notable for having these average-looking guys (namely himself) being paired with some of the most attractive women in Hollywood, but you're not necessarily questioning those couples the entire time. Even in that one with Jennifer Aniston, the women are both extremely conventionally attractive, BUT he's funny and charming and witty and you can just about see why they like him. This one has none of that.

Great video, I don’t know if you’ve seen Neighbors with Seth Rogan but I can’t help but think Seth did eventually hear Katherine’s criticisms.

In Neighbors, the climactic scene is Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen characters arguing and him saying she should be the responsible one…her character fights back on that notion and even though Seth didn’t write the movie, I did find it interesting taking into account a lot of Seth’s movies have perpetuated said notion.

I agree with your point that the feminist left does overlook fatphobia towards men but feel that Kevin can f**k himself doesn’t serve your point as well since he has other traits and behaviors that vilify him regardless of his appearance. Overall great essay and love the crazy ex girlfriend clip usage 🤝🏽

Im so glad i found tour channel! More like, the algorithm brought it to me, but either way

Thw first video i saw of yours was the one about Amy Schumer's, Trainwreck, about how thin white women have hijacked the body positivity movement (much like how every other societal breakthrough created by black women is stolen and rebranded, by "left leaning" women (first being pushed into the spotlight by rich white women, then quickly distributed to more poor and even right leaning women, until none of the fruits are left for black women, only negative, unwanted visibility)

I love the sims scenes! The long-form, your dry delivery, and most of all the wealth of valuable insight and strong opinions of fatphobia.

I consume a lot of intersectional content, and much of it touches on fatphobia. But i feel like first-person POV content that centers body positivity and fatphobia in society has been harder and harder to come across.. and things are getting worse all the time irl

All this to say, i subbed so fast, this is the 2nd video i watched of yours, i LOVE your takes its like a nreath of fresh air, and im gonna watch them all

stealthing is a conscious decision and the movie makes it clear that seth rogen's character was drunk and stupid. this was not a malevolent conscious choice and you presenting it as such to discredit the movie sucks. their relationship is classic sitcom stupid husband who loves and needs to listen to his much smarter more competent wife, ie homer -marge and it's clear that the movie message is saying he should improve himself. i've watched your other vids and really enjoyed them, i think your content is usually really well researched and explanatory but it's obvious that you didn't put the same care paying attention to this movie. i'm not saying this movie is flawless but watch it in good faith, and judge it accurately on what the movie is actually doing, don't just misinterpret something and pretend thats whats wrong with the movie.

I remember this movie was on E! All. The. Time! I hate it. The ending was so awful to me because I come from a family that wanted everyone 18, married and baby popping and family and friends would because forced into getting in relationships with the biggest losers because “they’ll change once the baby comes”. Like guys need a baby to do better and be a dependable person. Haven’t watched it in years but I remember thinking when her work found out about the pregnancy it seemed like they were making pregnancy a fad? Never watched this is 40, looked depressing af.
I guess a better version of this movie would be the Simpsons episode “I married Marge”.

@argusfleibeit1165 - 26.04.2024 05:14

I didn't like the whole premise of this movie, so I never watched it. I also did not find humor in the situation of becoming pregnant without intending to be, and then feeling like the decision had to be to have the baby. For decades this insidious trope has returned again and again in our dramas and comedy. It's almost as if they were trying to dissuade women from using the rights they HAD to keep control of what happened to their lives. It seemed like the only time abortion was treated as an option, the abortion would become the central topic of that episode or film. And with negative outcomes for the woman, unless she agreed to give birth. In view of what happened last year with Dobbs, I am even more convinced this was emotional propaganda on an ongoing basis, now with the intended result achieved. Except for all of the people in the states showing up to vote to get their rights back and keep protecting them. VOTE!

As someone hyperfixated in midwifery (not an expert) I always found the choice to put real birth footage in this film interesting, and I found what Apatow said in an interview, it was something like this: "yeah, it helps us to understand women's complaints about childbirth since it is very painful, men need to empathize more with them" but I know it's BS. It's so insanely obvious that it's a "childbirth ruins vagina woman no hot no more" mockery of the whole experience. This film was misogynistic as hell, not just coming from Rogen's and Rudd's characters but the Ken Jeong doctor as well. Basically told her to screw her birth plan.
Btw I think Juno also sucks. Seeing someone so hungry for keeping another person's baby is disgusting. It annoys me that Juno is seen as the "empowering" Knocked Up. Like give me a break girl

Honestly Judd Apatow films are so poorly edited in that they ALWAYS go too long and he also never knows how to properly end his movies. Even films where he's just the producer, like Bridesmaids, suffers from being far, far too long for a comedy and the jokes get tired quickly because they drag on with the improv etc a minute or so longer than it needs to be, thus making the scene feel like an unfunny slog.

I used to quite like his films when I was in my early 20's, but I always resented that he'd cast his family in them. I find Leslie Mann to be incredibly grating, even when her character isn't meant to be, like in Funny People. And while his kids were somewhat endearing in Knocked Up, as they got older their acting skills were absolutely not up to standard and there's no way they would have been cast if they weren't nepo babies. Maude Apatow was finally good by the time she was in Euphoria, but Iris Apatow is atrocious in the tv series Love (which, oh shock of all shocks was created by Judd).

Someone should have told him to lay off the pop culture references a bit, as they date his films so so much. He seems to think that if he just references a thing that it equals a joke. Using the "Family Guy" template for comedy is never a good idea. Freaks and Geeks was a genuinely great show, and I wish we saw more of THAT Apatow, before he got high off his own fumes and just continued to dish out tripe like this.

Pete and Ben are probably the best and worst versions of how Judd Apatow see’s himself. And by that logic I just made up— Alison and Debbie are the best and worst versions of Leslie Mann (in Apatow’a eyes)

I think my concern with the unattractive guy with the conventionally attractive woman is 99% of the time portrayed as a man’a fantasy.

The woman becomes this “trophy wife” or girlfriend in a way. And most of the time, they don’t have any personality aside from being the hot person the unattractive man gained.

I think this is why we have this misconception or worry when we see these relationships, that is what our minds go to. Not the two of these people fell for each other and are in a nice relationship.

However, I do feel the media is trying to change this, gradually, and with more people speaking out about these misconceptions, out brains are not focused on the stereotype.

But it is a case by case basis depending on the individuals.

I hate this movie so much. Thanks for covering it. It’s unwatchably misogynistic. As a teenager I cried after I saw it based on how much hatred and contempt for women that it had. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing and to this day, my family gives me crap about it. But I stand by my assessment that this is one of the worst, low-key, over-the-top, hateful films I’ve ever seen. Ungodly awful. Thanks for breaking it down.

You can make the "Is this what you think about your wife, Judd?" speculation because of his follow up film "This Is 40" wherein he literally says he's portraying his family (staring his entire family) replacing himself with Paul Rudd. He said it was a follow up to this film... Debbie and Pete years later. Their own film. However, I do think Karen's are not reprimanded by their communities, are very sad and unhappy women usually with weaponized incompetent husbands, who feel enabled by society to take this out on black/brown/Indigenous folk... And I do not know that there are many repercussions. That may be the most realistic part about this film.

I've never watched this movie in its entirety, but I remember hearing that Heigl's criticism got her blacklisted and always being pissed about that fact. It's not like she called the movie bad or the people she worked with horrible. She just criticised her own character, one aspect of a wildly successful movie, and was punished for it.
