Continuous NATO expansion towards Russian border after the collapse of the Soviet Union is the root cause of the problem. Imagine Putin or Xi Jinping trying to form a military alliance similar to NATO with Mexico or Cuba. I bet US will send troops in a flash and neutralize that threat.
