Sauron Suite | The Rings of Power: Season Two (Original Soundtrack) by Bear McCreary

Sauron's theme from season one grabbed so many people, including me, with its hideously evil, infested sound. While I loved how it was used in season one, going into season two I wondered; can this theme last a full five season show without getting potentially stale? The answer is yes. As Bear stated himself, this season was about contextualizing the character of Sauron whereas season one's use of the theme was to contextualize the idea of Sauron. The child soprano from the end of season one returns as one of Sauron's key musical signatures, it draws understanding and depth, yet it sounds more like a cry for help than a genuine kind of emotional exploration, which works perfectly for him. What Bear does so well during his time as Annatar is play Sauron's theme in a major key, turning what was once this evil and malicious melody into something far more wondrous and awe-inspiring. Bear also uses the B-theme from Sauron's concert suite as the theme for Annatar, conveying his majesty with an underlying sense of suspicion. The varied explorations of his theme make it so the typical choir and ostinato reprisals of his theme feel so much more evil and wicked, and with it his theme feels much more alive. I was hesitant to say it after season one, but after season two I can confidently say that this is the best villain theme Bear McCreary has ever made in his career.
