Regarding the military housing contracts and health issues; the news report failed to note that service members may forfeit their BHA (Base Housing Allowance) if they decline available (contracted) base housing. It's not just a matter of off-base (civilian) housing being too expensive; it's not often a choice, it affect a service member's pay and allowances and benefits. Additionally not noted are the added burden on the military healthcare system and providers (who are already be cut/downsized out of the military) due to these contractors not properly fixing and maintaining the properties, and furthermore, family members are not recognized for disabilities suffered like their active duty sponsors. And, this includes military housing, including barracks for unaccompanied service members overseas, for example, in Korea, the UK, Turkey and Germany. While family members don't wear the uniform and often are not directly sent into direct fire, they absolutely are often placed or live in harm's way and their sacrifices are made on a daily basis. Every child, every spouse, every secondary dependent (elderly parent, disabled adult child). They all make sacrifices and they don't always have a choice. Finally, this failure by our contractors to immediately step up, without question (!!!!), having received billions (after decades), to fix these problems, directly affects the readiness and deployability of our Armed Forces personnel--and their ability to focus on their job while deployed and it's inexcusable. Where's the integrity? Why aren't these companies doing what's right for the sake of doing what's right, not because eyes are on them and they've been exposed. It's great that military commanders have been, 'nothing but supportive,' but that's unhelpful. It's meaningless. Those commanders aren't up-channeling through their leadership to get the focus, to bring CODELS to do site visits and get the ball rolling towards oversight and correction. That these spouses must lead (self-funded) efforts themselves for the health, safety, welfare not just of their families, but our service members is inexcusable. Hopefully their efforts will gain traction within the right congressional offices as this administration does not care about our military, past, present, or future; active, any branch, any status, or their families.
