Unironically, the 2018->2014 in the thumbnail made me click the video

I think you have mistakenly mentioned 2014 instead of 2024 in thumbnail :D

Best thing i've done is sticking with only Postgres for the last 10 years. All skipped NoSQL crap like MongoDB and did not bother using MySQL ever again.

Aren't the MariaDB devs the original MySQL devs?

I don't see why someone would use MYSQL vs Postgres. I learned the basics of MYSQL first but the knowledge is somewhat transferable to other relational DB's. I am not a DB expert by any means so I may be incorrect I just don't see the reason to make that choice technically.

I would have thought that Oracle would have brought their expertise to bear to make MySQL better. I've never had a job were MySQL was used.

Why would anyone use MySQL over Postgres? What is your use-case that shows it to be better?

Please make a video about multi-tenant database design and how to shard it. It would be very informative. I chose MySQL over PostgreSQL because it seems it can be sharded via Vitess, whereas there isn't a good, battle-tested sharding solution for PostgreSQL.

AWS RDS uses My SQL 8.0 by default for new databases. Also looking at there announcement it doesn't look like they are keen on supporting 5.7 for a long time.

From day one it was always a junk indexing system that they laughingly called a "database", and never should have arisen in the first place. I blame the people who had no idea what benefits ACID provided. Not having transactional DDL and not even having granular transactions was a head slapper. You would have thought that Oracle's "investment" would have been the last straw, but clearly the zombie cultists were naive and unflappable. I'm relieved to see it fall from grace and hope it continues to a point where it disappears from the history books.

I can't imagine a case where I'd be running a site and assuming just a single DB query per user, an absurd assumption, where I'd go... 3 users per second, yeah that's good enough. Like WTF.

Not sure I add anything to the discussion, but when Oracle got ownership of MySQL and then MariaDB became the compatible alternative.. it was just easy to switch. Then PostgreSQL exists as well.. Also a great alternative.

Or for my use cases.. mostly just SQLite. :)

Also licensing introduced by Oracle. Only the community edition is free. And tooling around MySQL require java which is also not free for enterprises. Postgress is now better until a big company acquires it. And the cycle repeat 😂

The situation is worse than u depict. 28 - 36 is a disaster. 1st good release in that series was 37. All this focus on innodb cluster is crap. They need a totally different concept for the storage, like Aurora.

Postgres has been fast and reliable for years. MySQL is Oracle's loss-leader. Don't fall into an obvious Oracle trap, just use postgres!

Thanks for the video, I think MySQL it's doing a great work in long term versions, sadly many new futures are limited for paid versions and community version is behind to PostgreSQL.
