In the morning, there was a storm coming over Lake Wanaka. We could see a rainbow before the storm arrived. Just a couple of us took the rough and rainy boat ride to Mou Waho Island.
Mou Waho Island is an island in Lake Wanaka. The island has a lake called Arethusa Pool which has two small islands. So those island are in a lake (Arethusa Pool), on an island (Mou Waho), in a lake (Lake Wanaka), on an island (South Island) in the ocean (Pacific).
The trail led up to Tyrwhitt Peak.
As we walked, our guide talked about the conservation efforts on Mou Waho and in the rest of New Zealand. The goal is to eradicate the invasive species and encourage the resurgence of native flora and fauna. Some are able to recover on their own once the invasive predators have been removed. Others have to be reintroduced in to the area.
As we got higher, we could see our boat on the beach far below.
It was raining and very windy when we reached the highest lookout over Arethusa Pool. The wind was strong enough to create some small whitecaps on the pool below us.
Almost everybody else had already headed back to the boat. It was too dangerous to stay in that strong wind. We paused only long enough to take a few pictures before heading back down.
Along the way, we were fortunate enough to see a Buff Weka (Maori hen). It is a flightless bird native to New Zealand. Almost extinct, it has been reintroduced into a few protected areas.
It was still raining when we returned to the boat where there was hot chocolate and cookies waiting for us in the warm cabin. The rain had stopped by the time we reached Wanaka.
