You lost me when you started spewing nonsense about the "patriarchy".
ОтветитьExcellent
Ответитьdislike when academics say "gonna"
ОтветитьWhere were interesting teachers like her when I went to college? My art history teacher was awesome and my film teacher. But she’d make me change my major 20 years ago.
ОтветитьQueen Elizabeth II is also a descendant of Catherine Carey through her mother. Catherine Carey was a child of Mary Boleyn (Anne Boleyn's sister), and some historians also believe she could have been fathered by Henry VIII. Thus, technically, the descendants of Henry VIII could very well be on the throne already. Furthermore, the current monarchs are also descendants of Henry VII through his daughter Margaret.
ОтветитьLove watching these videos and this one was no exception! Although…I can’t get over the fact that her earrings remind me of…✨family jewels✨😂😅
ОтветитьI feel so bad for women in that time. You basically had to have babies. There’s a high chance you’d die during. And Imagine a period with zero pads/ tampons. No thanks
ОтветитьDefending from Edward iii too
ОтветитьBetter than Google! Love the content.
ОтветитьYes, England was “sort of a European backwater”. The British Empire is nothing but the murdering, destruction and extraction of wealth from people around the world. If they were to give back everything they took, what would it revert back to? 🤔
ОтветитьSo damn nice to hear someone say Henry VIII was just straight up the worst.
ОтветитьHoly moly she cute
ОтветитьWhy didn't you mention in the Tudor bloodline question the fact that the modern royal families of Britain and Europe are direct descendants of Henry VII? Maybe I missed something in the question though
ОтветитьThe Tudor freaks. had the same problem as freak William I had; no real claim on the English throne...in both cases, vile cruelty, horror, and human blood-sport...blood flowed like water. Insecure usurpers.
ОтветитьExcellent presentation ... except for the war of the Roses reference ... it wasn't even linked to Rose-colours until Shakespeare's time; then the bloody, almost cogent Victorians took it up. They dramatized the whole thing, and-like everything historical that they seized, made up "history" in their own fetid imaginations, and named it the War of the Roses....sigh.
Ответитьreusable toilet paper…yaaay! what i wouldn’t give to boil down some sh_t stained wool….
ОтветитьCan you back some of your comments such as “men were encouraged to beat their wives and children?” Can you tell use what documents you are referring to?
ОтветитьKind of shocked that smallpox was left off the illness list when it had such an impact on QE1? But yes to sweating sickness. Arguably uprooted the dynasty.
ОтветитьInstead of What Would Jesus Do I just think to myself, What Would Henry VIII do, and do the opposite.
ОтветитьThe groom of the stool
ОтветитьI wouldn't say he "killed a bunch of wives". That's misleading-he executed two.
ОтветитьSmallpox ? As a prevalent disease?
ОтветитьWell presented, enjoyed very much.
ОтветитьSo so so interesting !
ОтветитьI’m LIVING for how much she shits on Henry 8 😂
ОтветитьHenry VIII was the first Trump as a leader. Arrogant, greedy and a misogynist.
ОтветитьFor the rest of the world the worst ruler was Elizabeth I
Ответитьthat was informative
Ответитьi thought this was one of the haim sisters for a second
ОтветитьThey didn't, they got it wiped.
ОтветитьAs soon as the question about whether the Tudor line still existed was asked, I knew the answer was yes because I’m one of the people who can trace their ancestry back to Henry VII. I can trace my lineage back to him through Mary, Queen of Scots.
ОтветитьBook seems worth reading! Great vid. One thing confused me a bit though. Henry VIII, a terrible king? I know he was a brutal tyrant who killed many, but I've heard other historians represent that he brought England forward into the modern age.
ОтветитьThank you so much for bringing up the average age issue. It drives me crazy because so many people don't understand how the infant mortality rate drives down the average. Because risk of death was very real for pregnant women, I wouldn't use the if you lived to your 30s you would have a long life in regard to women. But definitely if you survived your childbearing years, you had good odds of living into your 70s or 80s.
ОтветитьCould we get a Habsburg history expert?
ОтветитьWhat happened in 1450 so that you consider that year a dividing line between Medieval Period and Early Modern? Do you look at the changes of written script and spoken languages? Would these years only apply to England or do they also apply to Wales and Scotland? Do they apply to the continent?
Nowadays, even modern monarchs must grasp the importance of retaining their private papers for historians to review decades later. In America, we have the Presidential Papers Act that requires every scrap of paper to be saved for the future Presidential Library in that President’s name. Is there any obligation for modern monarchs to retain such journals? Around what time did archivists convince the royal households of the need to keep as much documentation of the day to day workings and thought process, for the decades to come?
If there is any type of legal retention law, when do those records first open for research? I remember something about Queen Victoria’s private chambers in the Isle of Wight being closed for 50 years after her death. Was that arbitrary? I know Queen Victoria was a prolific journal author. However, her daughter redacted, edited and even destroyed much of the crucial writings out of embarrassment during the early 20th century. Would such redactions and edits be allowed nowadays?
"Very few women were educated... beyond running a household"... Whereas today, very few are educated to run a household...
Ответитьone of my favourite obscure tudor history facts was that one time elizabeth i ditched a meeting to watch robert dudley play tennis lol
ОтветитьHenry VIII was not the worst. He did a lot of good things, notably destroying the power of the Catholic Church in England. That paved the way for the religious freedom we have today, By which I mean that we are free to not believe it without fear of persecution, unlike most countries.
IMO, the worst was 'Bloody Mary) (Mary I) who tried to reinstate the Catholics in power and during her five-year reign, had over 280 religious dissenters burned at the stake. 3 of them were burned in my town and their remains rest in the church graveyard.
Should have gotten David Starkey. No one on earth is a better Tudor historian.
ОтветитьBrilliant video
ОтветитьIt's disingenuous to say that women dying from child birth in this era is because of the patriarchy. Until modern times and medicine complications from child birth was prevalent for every country.
ОтветитьNot a movie, but Wolf Hall is wonderful.
ОтветитьThis woman’s accent is fascinating! I want to know if she’s someone from the UK who lives in North America, or someone from North America who lives in the UK. Her accent is a mixture of both.
ОтветитьElizabeth II was descended from Catherine Carey, Mary Boleyn’s eldest daughter. Catherine was born around the time of Henry and Mary’s affair. Many contemporaries believed her to be Henry’s daughter.
Diana was descended from Henry Carey who was born after Mary was married to her husband. Henry never claimed Henry Carey, but he did claim an illegitimate son with Bessie Blount. If Henry Carey was Henry VIII’s it stands to reason that he would have been claimed. Since he wasn’t it is unlikely that Henry Carey was a Tudor. Henry needed sons, but had an abundance of daughters.
So the current Prince of Wales, William, would not be the first probable descendant of Henry VIII, his grandmother Elizabeth II was.
I wonder how people will talk about us in 500 years time and whether they'll even care that much about what we got up to. I think they will. Afterall, we gave the world the internet and A.I.
ОтветитьHell ya this lady makes it all fun
ОтветитьI love her. Her expression when talking about male fashion during Lizzie 2's reign and referring back to the cod pieces of Henry 8.
The best however is: 'An inglorious death' when dying from dysentery - that is hilarious. (Dysentery = you shit and puke yourself to death)
How you doin’ Dr Joanne
