Hefei Castle was the hardest stage in the game for me. Mostly because I was stuck using Sima Shi with his base weapon and no strategies to help buff him. This stage is something of a doozy because the enemy have 4 Assault Bases. If you aren't aware, Assault Bases can grant the enemy x2 attack, or you if it's on your side. So with 4 of them, they basically always have the attack buff, and they also have juggernauts in them later in the game, which can do a number on you.

Sima Shi's moveset also isn't the greatest in this game. Why? Because both jump canceling and double jumping have been removed. Air musous were also removed and replace with a unique musou utilizing the touch/motion controls for this game. So getting juggled is very bad. But mostly, the rapier moveset in 7/8 relied heavily on double jumping away after a combo to provide some distance so it's single target oriented moveset doesn't leave you open. Can't do that here, so I lost on this stage 3 times just trying to clear it thanks to all this. Real annoying. I also think it's the only time I died that wasn't during a mini-game. At least with the mini-games you're allowed to restart immediately, even the duels. But there's no mid-stage saves so you just have to redo it from the beginning even if you die towards the end.
