They DID kill a lot of the creativity just because there is way, way less options. That's not a question, it's a mathematical fact. And the more I read Bourassa bad talking his own work, more I see they don't understand or don't like their own game

I'm optimistic, but also doubtful. I really did not like the linear 5 run campaign of iratus. I like dd 's play and your own pace, choose where you want to go and beat the campaign when you felt you were ready.

idk how i feel about the changes because I won't be able to play it, and even if I was, i never buy games on early access on principle, but i'm still interested. i do think that turning it into a pure roguelike diminishes replayability significantly, though. There's a reason rogueLITES are way more popular than their pure progenitor.

I recently played a lot of slay the spire , loved the formula , and I m also a big big fan of DD , so there is definetly room to make dd2 a good rogue like I think. That being said and without having read the article I share your concerns for sure cause what u said made a lot of sens.
The thing that keep my hopes high tho is knowing the dev team remains mostly the same and those ppl are very talented.
About the new artstyle Im not fan but maybe we ll get used to it and end up liking it.
In any case, the hype is real ^^!

I’m just confused on why this Barossa guy keeps dunking on the previous game and acts like there was nothing left they could do with DD1 formula. They could have added in different armors and weapons that you could find or earn, they could have added in several different hamlets to jump between to do the globe trotting thing, they could have increased the amount of abilities or increase party size. Imagine if you could upgrade the inventory to have higher stack limits or just a bigger inventory in general. Of course the biggest thing would be adding new heroes to use. To think that the formula of DD1 has been completely explored just makes me think that the devs, or just this Barossa guy, aren’t that good at game design or understanding what makes it great. Also bring back ACC, if you’re even half decent at the game you barely miss

Edit: Forgot to mention trinkets too. If they think that the trinkets from DD1 were bad then just make better trinkets for DD2 while keeping the old gameplay loop. Earnable trinkets from event bosses, champion bosses and dlc trinkets were great. Just add in more of that

Some of the changes are things I do not seem to be a fan of. I of course, will give the studio a chance to prove me wrong, and change the game as the original Darkest Dungeon changed DRASTICALLY from early on to its 1 year out version. I have my fingers crossed but yea, we shall have to see how they listen to fan feedback and IF they are open to changes as they were in the first game.

Honestly if the just made the leper a lil bigger than others, I may like it a bit more, like he just looks like a man child compared to the rest of them, despite being depicted as a pillar and a force yet he just looks sooo..... wonky idk, otherwise the rest is tolerable

Ship of Theseus scenario.
And also, I hope they make the more skills to be more specific and less generic. Allowing you to build the heros in different ways like the Highway man as a ranged or melee unit. Creating Debuffs or stealing positive ones. Maybe a hybrid to take down a certain boss. I doubt this game will give us hits a generic “do damage” skill or stun skill without it being more specific.
So less characters but more skills not to fill more required roles but to make certain ideas just as possible, while being less resource intensive. By full release we might even have double the roster size of this now. Like the game, I’d be hopeful, and get our spirits crushed when it burns away right in front of us.

Hades and Risk of Rain 2 are my favourite roguelites. And for both the 'lite' part is what makes them interesting. For hades its the constant unlocking of small upgrades and story that you get with every run, for risk of rain 2 its just the plethora of ingame challenges and unlockable content - your first run starts with the very basics, and over time, the more you explore the game, the more characters, abilities, items, even areas get unlocked.
I hope DD2 goes for a similar type of replayability as RoR2 honestly.

"People dont like missing" is such a dumb statement tbh.
RNG based games are literally built around taking a chance, and even skill based games are built around you being able to hit or fail to hit

Ответить
@morinor1340
@morinor1340 - 06.06.2021 14:52

Going from one game genre to another one can work out amazing, risk of rain went from a 2D sidescroller to a 3D third person shooter, and both games are amazing.
But im not sure if DD2 will manage to do the same thing, build of the strengths of the precursor while making something that seems entirely new.
So far it looks to me like they mostly cast aside the old games strengths.

How could they say they weren't happy with art style of the DD 1? It was the 1st thing that caught my eye and my interest in the game. I absolutely despise simplistic, clean, "mobile-like" design. DD 1 design was fresh sip of air when I bought it in 2017 that really nailed atmosphere and immersion. The art style details of background and UI. It showed how much effort, passion and care has been put to it.Simplification is not the way.

I originally didn’t like the art at all, but its grown on me. I am looking forward to most of the features you don’t seem to like. Only problems i have with it are how you can only have one of each class in the journey and that meltdowns “reset” relationships. I think that relationships are going to be the backbone of the new game, and meltdowns resetting relationships don’t make any sense.

Hah, the example you're trying to think of at the end of the video is a comparison to Plants vs Zombies. It went from a tactical 2D tower defense game to a 3rd person arena shooter. DD2 may be going the same way, but I'm hopeful regardless.

If you don't mind, I've got a few thoughts as well that I'd like to share: 1. I disagree with you on the negative effects of having only one of each class in your party. I don't think it will completely overshadow all the party building, but I do think there will be a "meta" or two. It just sounds like the team building from Butcher's Circus, where a couple of clear "builds" are present, but there's still room for customization.

2. On that same note, I'm actually pretty excited for the new skills for the heroes. One extra skill doesn't sound game-breaking to me, and I think it'll actually open up more customization, as now if heroes can fill different roles, it effectively multiplies the number of classes. Just like how in DD1 you could do both a "support" jester build and a "Finale" build, I think every class will have something similar, and that sounds awesome.

3. I know you said you don't really care, but I for one am super excited for the additional animations for heroes and skills. I think it'll give the characters even more personality, and it gives me hope that trinkets will also be visible on the heroes. Overall, it might be an unnecessary change, but it still sounds like a nice addition.

All together, great video, it definitely got me thinking!

i think the main thing is that we all are wondering if the game can keep up with its prequel for how long it take to develop.
take diablo 3 for example, the game was good but not as good as we expected it to be especially after ... 10 years waiting ?

The reason why they are making pretty big changes like this is because they don’t want the first game to be obsolete by the community. If it was literally just a better version of the first game,no one would really play it anymore. That’s why the changes are kinda big. If people don’t like this game, they can go back and play the first game.

to be honest i like that they went a different way with the second game. I think it makes it so they don't invalidate the first game. so if you want like the never version then you play that and you still have the old version if you wanna play it. would be nice if they still supported dd1 but we cant really hope for that. its sort of like runescape old school and runescape 3. but again i try an be optimistic when it comes to games and not see everything as a flaw

The first game is one of my favorite strategy games, and I am not a stranger to rogue-likes our rogue-lites, sure a lot is going to change and not everything is going to be perfect, but I'm preaty sure that, for better or worse, that game will be able to carry the DD mythos and still be enjoyable

This has mobile game written all over it as it stands...

There are so many red flags it is getting scary.
Predicted ~5 hour loop, with DLC planned FROM THE START reeks of cashgrab. They are basically admitting this "yeah, we sell you unfinished product, so you will be able to pay multiple times to eventually, maybe get the complete thing".

You will be managing one team this time around - to me, the whole team management was a big part of DD. Stress meant you could not always pick and choose favourite compositions, which forced you to experiment and adapt to sub-optimal situations and the like.
Current system, as far as I see it, will immediately devolve into a clear meta, with 1-2 team comps being optimal, and the rest will be basically a way to gimp your own run.

Another thing that bothers me is lack of RNG - don't get me wrong, it was a bit excessive at times in the original, but it also built tension. Every combat could go wrong at any moment, and mitigating unfavourable circumstances was a big part of building your characters, choosing abilities and trinkets. Now the combat is apparently supposed to play more like a puzzle - it is a red flag to me again. Puzzles have clear solutions. Once you know the solution, there is no tension left.
