I think anybody wanting to learn about the Softail range needs to see this video. Matt does a great job bringing the history into the narrative. I believe you nailed it Matt!
So hard to pick a number one Softail from the line up. However, given your scoring criteria, one would have to agree with you for choosing the Heritage.
That said, here's my weird thoughts. My favourite Harley is the Fat Boy, but the one I would 'buy', is the Softail Deluxe in all its nostalgic glory. ( I own a 2020 Pearl White M8 Deluxe ) Reckon I need to also buy a Fat Boy, one day.

I do not recall my Night Train having a 7 speed transmission.

My current bike is none other that a 2023 Heritage Softail. Never thought I would want one, didn't really like the retro style, but it's the most comfortable bike Ive ever owned.

1996 Softail Springer is what made me want a Harley!

I loved my Sport Glide. I agree, the fairing was horrible. I put a Memphis Shades Road Warrior Faring on it. But I did love the Mantis wheels though.

Totally agree. I’m rockin a 2020 heritage coming off a 2009 Foad King. Night and Day. The new Softail frame is amazing . don’t know abut the older ones but what im riding now is far superior to the “touring’” chassis I was on.

My least favorite softail in the M8 lineup... the Fat Bob. And if you've EVER ridden a Fat Boy in a stiff crosswind.... those solid rims act like wind sails and can get you killed. Dangerous, really.

Matt first sport glides were 1977 FLHS 1200 to 1983 FLHS 80 . Belt drive stripped FLH. Not the woke rubber glides which NONE real men Bought.😉

Love these history videos, especially if it has a top 10 list. and i think you pretty much nailed it. you're right, the top three is a toss up. it would have been hard for me not to have a springer in at number one. the softails really are some of Harley Davidson's most beautiful bikes. I for one really never get tired of looking at them and discussing them. had an '07 Night Train and sold it a few years ago, I've been sick ever since..

Good video. The only disagreement i have is the sport glide and low rider st. I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the low rider st's fairing is ugly, I know I'm in the minority on that but I've never liked that or the original it comes from. The sport glide fairing I like when it has a taller windscreen, and the only knock on the sport glide is it should have come with the 114

Great video ! My favorite 3 softails all fall within your top 5 - the Deluxe, the Fat Boy, and the Heritage. Recently saw a Heritage without the windshield and bags, and with whitewalls and Fatboy handlebars. It looked absolutely awesome. Gotta say, though, the Fatboy is my all time favorite - the pre-2018 versions, that is.

I have a real Harley and also an ‘07 FLSTSC and would argue that softail is the best. It blends nostalgia, safety and comfort with style perfectly.

Agree with this list and especially the #1 Heritage Softail. My first HD and it pains me everyday that I sold it for a SGS. I’m looking for another to replace it but the garage is a little full with 2020SGS AND 2017RKS…MAKE ME A DEAL!

Excellent review!! Got to say, in my personal opinion, you nailed it with your top choices…I rode other brand bikes for a couple decades until I woke up and got a Heritage…I’ve been a very happy Harley rider ever since.

Matt, excellent assessment. The Deluxe is actually better looking than the Heritage, even though not as popular. Please ask the Motor Company to bring back the Deluxe.

What about the FXS Blackline from 2011-12-13? My absolute favorite of all HD Softails!

Over 6 decades riding and I'm riding the 2009 Heritage Classis I purchased new. Great motorcycle for me. Even for long rides I prefer it over the Ultra Classis...I sold.

I have a 19 sport glide, absolutely love it, can't understand what your saying yes I agree with the fairing that's it. I club styled my sport glide, it's unbelievable machine. Best Harley ever , that's right, ever made in my opinion. And a number 1 sold Harley in Europe.

Great video! Love the History. I actually traded my 2018 Roadglide Ultra for a 2024 Heritage Softail Classic. I rode a softail custom and an evo fatboy for years and when I bought the Roadglide Ultra I missed just being behind some chrome bars and lights and that more raw feel. The Fltru is a great bike but I never used the radio or the navigation anyway. I decided I prefer the basics. These newer softails with the M8 and the new frame are Awesome!

Fat Boy remains the king for me, 2nd Softail de luxe as OG base for Vicla and Chicano style, 3rd the jack of all trades bike the Heritage Springer, Hydra Glide and Classic. Agree the name fits better for the Low Rider St but the Sport Glide is a great versatile bike and Sonny (Adam) is innocent for that naming trouble. The beauty Hydra Glide I would love to put in my living room.
