I know this is super late, but I'm pretty sure I remember it being mentioned on the 1st episode of the "Time to Explain" podcast that the story mode was temporarily scrapped because what they were testing lacked the replayability that they were wanting.

A few months later and we are getting a bunch of new pirate skins. Also the winner is a kraken, similiar to the one attacking the pirate boat background.
