I don't believe you should strive for either short or long variable names you should name the SEMANTICALLY, or name them what they mean.

It's going to be much more time efficient to type out the var (or not even with autocompletion on) and know what it means than to get yourself lost in a sea of short, non-descriptive variable names later on.

For large projects, you will NEVER regret using descriptive variable and function names.!!!!

Don't not use long names for your variables if you are naming them semantically. Who doesn't use an IDE and types the variable name out every time?
