ОтветитьHas to come back to this today. Thank you, Coach Bennett!
ОтветитьIn 2019, The Hoos, led by Final Four MOP Kyle Guy, had one of the greatest redemption stories in college basketball history After becoming the 1st 1 seed to ever lose to a 16 seed in 2018, The Hoos won their 1st ever natty in 2019. This run included tight wins in each of their last 4 games. In the Sweet 16, they held off a game 12 seeded Oregon team 53-49. In the Elite 8, Mamadi Diakite, benefitting from a clutch pass from Kiehi Clark, who had the composure to find and hit Diakite rather than force up a wild half court shot, hit a game typing jumper at the end of regulation and The Hoos won in overtime 80-75. Then, in the National Semifinals, The Hoos survived War Eagle when Kyle Guy made 3 clutch free throws with 1.5 seconds left to lift The Hoos to a 63-62 win. (He was fouled, no whining or bitching about this game.) In the National Championship Game, the Red Raiders held a late 3 point lead. But DeAndre Hunter calmly nailed a clutch came tying 3 from the right corner with 12.9 seconds left and The Hoos went on to win in overtime 85-77 as DeAndre Hunter became his era's Mario Chalmers.
The Red Raiders, led by Big 12 Player of the Year Jarrett Culver, made their 1st ever Final Four appearance. Their National Runner finish was their best in program history. Their incredible season hit its peak in the National Semifinals with a win over Sparty.
War Eagle, led by SEC Tournament MVP Brice Brown, also made its 1st Final Four appearance. War Eagle began its postseason run by winning it's 1st SEC Championship since 1985. Then, they became only the 2nd team ever (1997 Arizona) to beat the 3 biggest bluebloods in the same NCAA Tournament, knocking off Rock Chalk Jayhawk in the Round of 32, Heel Blue in the Sweet 16, and Big Blue Nation in the Elite Eight.
Sparty, led by Big 10 Player of the Year and Big 10 Tournament MVP Cassius Winston, made their 1st Final Four appearance since 2015. Sparty began its postseason run by winning its 1st Big 10 Championship since 2019, knocking off the 2 time defending champion Maize and Blue in the Big 10 Championship Game. In the NCAA Tournament, they would get the better of the Dukies in the Elite 8. As I love seeing the bluebloods play against each other in the NCAA Tournament, I enjoyed this game immensely.
Iowa State, led by Big 12 Tournament MVP Marial Shayock, won its 4th Big 12 Championship in 6 years. In the mid to late 2010s, Iowa State clearly established itself as a regular contender in the Big 12, though they never became a National Championship contender.
Nova, led by Big East Tournament MVP Phil Booth, won its 4th Big East Championship in 5 years. Unlike Iowa State, Nova, was able to transcend conference success and compete at the national level, including winning 2 nattys in 3 years in 2016 and 2018.
Oregon, led by Pac 12 MVP Payton Pritchard, won its 1st Pac 12 Championship since 2016. I was very happy about this result because Oregon won the 1st ever NCAA Tournament in 1939 and I wanted them to be part of the 80th anniversary tournament and they would NOT have received an at large bid. They continued their hot streak with a 12-5 upset of On Wisconsin in the Round of 64. They then beat UC-Irvine in the Round of 32 to advance to the Sweet 16 before the Hoos silenced their quacks.
Oregon's bid turned out to be stolen from UNC Greensboro. I think Greensboro should have gotten in and the bid should have been stolen from The Johnnies instead. The commitee got it right putting in Belmont and Temple.
My Sun Devils made an NCAA Tournament appearance for the 2nd year in a row. This time, they would beat their New York based opponent in the 1st 4 game by knocking off The Johnnies. Buffalo then knocked us out as though we were a 3 year old boxing against prime Mike Tyson in the Round of 64.
2019 was a banner year for the ACC as Heel Blue, The Dukies, and The Hoos all got 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament.
The Dukies, led by ACC Player of the Year and ACC Tournament MVP Zion Williamson, won their 2nd ACC Championship in 3 years. Zion had one of the great conference tournament runs of all time, much like Kemba in the 2011 Big East Tournament. Zion averaged 27 points per game over 3 games. He scored 29 points on a perfect 13 for 13 night against The Cuse in the ACC Quarterfinals, scored 31 points and a had a key block on Luke Maye against Heel Blue in the ACC Semifinals, and scored 21 points against The Noles in the ACC Championship Game. What a run. Zion was probably the last college basketball player to have true "star power" until Cooper Flagg came along.
