Turkey is only four rankings above the ‘blacklist’ in Freedom of the Press. The report is announced at the anniversary of Turkey’s ban on the free encyclopaedia platform Wikipedia. It is been more than a year Turkey added Wikipedia to censored internet websites list. This ban does not only affect Turkish users reaching Wikipedia but also data entries from Turkey. In 2017, Turkish authorities banned access to Wikipedia in any language from Turkey. Turkish government’s explanation for the ban was that there were two English articles about the weapons sent to paramilitary groups in Syria. The managers of the free encyclopaedia said the government has a right to upload the documents and references and respond the claim. When the media outlets that are shut down, ban to Wikipedia and thousands of other websites considered the level of the problem is apparent. A group of Turkish academics commented on the situation and said in a joint manifesto “Do not be afraid of information or words. Turkey needs to wake up and should not be blacklisted.”
