I hate that about a month ago I half jokingly said to my partner "I haven't heard about Greta Thunberg in a while" in a conversation about hurricanes and climate change. Now I'm worried for her and the rest of the vessel on top of those they were on the way to give aid to.

If I was on a vessel in the 1930's that was invaded by DE paratroopers, all of them pointing their weapons in my face, while one of them was offering me a sandwich--what would I do?

The answer: smile meekly and accept the sandwich and hope they don't shoot me. That's what I see in that picture of Greta.

It's crap that they didn't get their rice to the Palestinians but she got a good few weeks sailing, a free flight home and the world has seen it.. She's annoying all the right people. The people she's not winding up are thinking about Palestinians and will donate to her causes, in response. I think she accomplished her mission, really.

I need to watch this video because I’m very far on the left yet feel like the flotilla was a stunt that didn’t matter. Everyone , including those on the flotilla knew 100 percent that they would be bombed or intercepted. It didn’t bring awareness to a genocide. Everyone knows there is a genocide even those who deny it for political reasons. All it does is take media attention off of dying Palestinian children and put it onto a captured Swedish girl.

The criticism of "selfies" is meant to imply that these people don't matter due to their inferior character, inferior moral standing, their selfishness and narcissism compared to upstanding Israeli citizens who are selfless and self-sacrificing. I think the “selfie yacht” thing has two prongs: one is to make associations for rightwingers with their detestation of “degenerate selfie culture”. You know, dehumanizing people who make their money on only fans etc. The other prong is about defanging the criticism of IOF selfies with Palestinian women’s underwear, intentionally drawing that focus away from the even more evil selfie videos they’ve done dancing in front of demolitions of homes, mosques, schools, hospitals. I mean it clearly was a publicity stunt, and a very successful one at that, they predicted that Israel would do this and the fact that they where dumb enough to do it on international waters was just a big bonus. Greta always does this, inserts herself in legitimate causes and makes it all about her. Compare the amount of conversation that is about her and the activists to the amount added about the people of gaza and israels actions there. Its easily 95% about the activists.

There is almost universal concensus among the vast majority of scientists that the climate is being drastically altered by human activity. To call climate activism 'controversial' is how the neoliberal, reactionary, free libertine, 'small government' brigade would describe it. Why are there activists? The answer is because they see relatively little being done by the establishment to stop or slow carbon emissions. Climate change due to human activity has been described for over a century. The fossil fuel industry's scientists were tasked with refuting the growing established evidence that burning fossil fuels causes climate change. Even if this climate chaos that the whole globe is experiencing is not human induced, it is much more prudent to tackle it with various strategies. To stand-by, suffer the consequences and 'party on' like there's no issue is grossly short-sighted. Climate chaos costs us eye-watering sums due to extreme weather including insurance premiums but it will cause massive devastation in the global south, which, given that there is less land mass in the southern hemispere, will put even more pressure on migration to the northern hemisphere. How can it be in any way, shape or form controversial to wish a better future for our planet's population while most of industry and politicians greenwash and prevaricate over this?
