Been using Linux since 1999? Prove it, i'm tired of these people who claim they've been using it that long and really it's about 5 years. The two video editors you offered up.. I'm sorry but Shotcut is far superior to Kdenlive, you can even overlay HTML5 in your videos. If you were a seasoned Linux user you would know that but no, instead you offer up the novice options.

My issues in jumping to any linux distro is that I have spent big bucks already in DROBO and also that I need a DVD and BluRay back up program that also does compression, because who wants each movie file to be 50 Gigabytes/...And also...I'm not a network admin by any stretch of the imagination.

"you can create games in blender"
stop it.
blender didnt evolved in this area, in fact, they are dumping their game engines.
godot is a much better software for that kind of task, or if you dont mind pay 5% of your profits, unreal engine is avaliable for linux, or in the proprietary side of things Unity..

there is no way to recommend blender instead of those.

Couple of things, Blender is scheduled to go through a major UI overhaul in the next full release to make it easier to use. Or you can use Bforartists which simplifies the UI now.

Love Krita. Just downloaded a major Gimp update. Its finally improving too.

Great video guys.
It's interesting because you guys have a very different experience with Kdenlive then I do.
Every time I try to switch to Linux I always end up coming back because I can't find a reasonable Premiere replacement.
Kdenlive, for me, is much much slower, less efficient and not nearly as stable as Premiere is.. were it not for that I would use Linux as my full time machine apart from gaming and VR.
I've tried some of the other editors available and had even worse experiences.
Lightworks seems to be the most stable, but I don't like the workflow there.. too much of a paradigm shift for me.
I LOVE Resolve, but not great on Linux.. especially with the audio output deal.
I keep trying it again every few months though, so I'm hoping it will be at a place I'm happy with it one of these tries. 😉

Switching becomes easy when a manufacturer takes away a usable keyboard from a laptop cough Apple MacBook Pro with butterfly keyboard *cough*... So the decision of making the final switch to a refurb Lenovo Thinkpad + GNU/Linux was made on my behalf a couple of years ago.

The first effort in making the switch was perhaps 15 years ago. I had a license for a proprietary software which I used at work with my clients. The company changed owners and I wasn't able to upgrade.

I started learning F/OSS tools and installed GNU/Linux and these days I can do everything with OSS tools I need to do. I am also free from the "ecosystem" of the proprietary software companies.

Also..

I don't need to use OS X or Windows - which I can if I want to, because OSS tools work on these systems as well.

Yes, Blender isn't easy to learn. But at least when it comes to 3d modeling, animation and rendering, the commercial alternatives are no easier to get into. When it comes to video editing, post effects, 2d animation, though (yes, blender can do just about everything for some reason) it is needlessly convoluted sometimes.

Great conversation, I've just watched it again as I'm moving from MacOSX and picking up great recommendations for apps on Linux. I started moving from Mac last year when I finally had to stop using my iPhone 4 and got an android phone as wasn't gonna pay apple prices and fancied trrying android. I replaced apple notes with standard notes which is great as its encrypted but alot of features are on a paid plan so I may take a look at simple note again as standard notes is only available for Linux as an appimage which I gather is not able to be updated? As you talk alot about privacy and security have you tried standard notes? I like it as its simple to use and secure. I have still been using apple mail on the hackintosh so started using thunderbird after seeing this video. I haven't used it for many years and it still looks the same! Do you know how to change the font size on the main message panel ? As everything is too small I've got the message fonts sorted for composing and the actual email. I did get more info Google as I've got back into web design and it's necessary but I've started my retreat and started using libre office again. I'm back using Firefox again. It's amazing to see the range of software on Linux I had no idea and I'm excited about this new adventure. I still have proprietary apps but will will try and replace with as much FOSS as possible the only thing is something's I need to use over all my devices so may not be able to do with everything but I like what you said about using the best tool for the job and not being ideological about it. I have come across some haters for certain distros / DE's but I guess it's about what works for you! This seems to be a great community people are very warm and eager to help. I use toggl to track my time do you know of a cross platform version or a Linux that's on Android as well? As when I installed. It was 2.6gb which seems excessive for such an app. I will need to learn Gimp and darktable for photo editing. Dark1 mentioned lollypop for music what was the kde version as I'm using Kubuntu. Keep up the good work guys!
