I’ve only seen a reaction because I may be too freaked out too see it theaters, but man the scenes I saw were really damn good. Demi did awesome and so did Qualley. It truly is a horror for some of us women. We really need to not gaf, but sometimes that can be hard.

I think its impresive that there's so much sexually-charged nudity in this movie that actually enhances how horrific the events happening are. We live in such a puritan-contrarian world right now that that's extremely hard to pull off yet they did it with flying colors.

The Substance seems like yet another movie made for the current moment, intentionally ripping off moments of older iconic horror movies, and a runtime that needs to be 30 minutes shorter. I’m not watching.

My opinion on this movie differs slightly. High budget film, so the sounds and film are extraordinary. This film to me was pretty great through the first 2 hours, but that ending man, it sucked. It was like a knock-off Carrie scene with a hideous creature behind it all. Love the message behind the film, but I feel as if it could have been wrapped up better than it was! Love you Charles

I'd wished I watched this before I watched the actual movie. With my partner, no less. We went into this only knowing what we got from Google, it describing the movie as "satirical body horror." I figured there'd be a good amount of gross body stuff that would probably have important things to say about how the entertainment industry will turn on women once they show any sign of aging and treat them like dirt. We did not come out of that movie unscathed. My partner was in such a state of shock and disgust after the movie, we barely talked the whole way back home. I thought that they were disgusted and pissed at me for taking them to see that egregious display of fluids and body parts and squishy sounds. Idk if anything could've prepared them for that. It's a film where the less you know, the more fucked you'll come out of it, and if that's some ppl's bag, I ain't knocking it. For me, definitely a one-time viewing. I didn't hate it, but yeah, one time is all I'm ever gonna need. For my partner, I wouldn't be surprised if a part of them has a small evil eye with a thousand-yard stare at me for making them endure over two hours worth of over-the-top body horror.

personally i thought the film was very mediocre. it felt pretty lazy at times. the message is very generic, the characters are flat, the body horror was disappointing and not at all the level of gross bordering realism i would've expected. body horror is one of the genres that scares and grosses me out the most, but thats because it usually is sort of realistic in a way. the substance completely ignored the limits of the human body. it felt almost sci-fi in a way? and yet there wasnt really any world building to hint that it was a futuristic world. the people creating the substance didnt gain anything, and they kept telling elizabeth to remember that her and sue are one, yet theyre not. theyre two completely seperate people with different wants and needs.
also it pissed me off when the guy from the hosital was shown again as old and they felt the need to do a flashback, a zoom in on his eyes, zoom in on his birthmark, show the card. its like, do you think im stupid? i knew it was him just from those weird ass eyes. what was up with those anyway? the end was very sad of course, but i just felt myself thinking, what was the point?
it was like watching the barbie movie all over again with a surface level feminist message, that just never really dove into anything worthwhile.
2/5 stars

Reminds me of a similar experimental movie called “The Meaning of Life”

First thing you see if pantless corporate men preparing sail on 20 story building, then it turns into a full blown battle ship attacking other corporate buildings. I suggest watching this movie with a glass of water and 3.5 grams of shrooms.

An incredible, brutal, disturbing, over-the-top, depressing, intense, emotionally devastating, dark, gross, and digusting satirical body and psychological horror movie with a campy self-aware tone and a dark, twisted streak of humour running right through it. It's extremely cool to see such a campy gross-out movie be so good and well made and well acted and a body horror with two female protagonists and directed by a woman. That's pretty unusual, normally women make delicate movies, and the gross body horror stuff is normally done by dudes rather than very, very artsy and meticulous French indie movie directors. Then again, French movies are always messed up, I don't think I have even seen a single remotely tame French movie, so a movie with a French director being so messed up isn't unusual, actually. Nudity and botderline softcore p*rn is very normal for a French person directed movie. The French are notoriously perverted people. In French movies, they pretty much never bother to try to use the scenery to block the view of people's genitals, they don't even try. If the actor is naked and it happens their bits get caught on camera, their attitude is so be it. Men and women alike. I saw a French movie where 2 men with their d***s flailing about started fighting with razor blades and then he sliced open his eye with it and then his carotid artery in his neck and they showed all of it, then you see the naked guys, one of them dead, and their genitals, covered in copious amounts of blood. And not in a kung fu or fun over-the-top way, no, in an extremely gritty, struggling for survival, dark and serious way that was incredibly upsetting and disturbing. You just see that kind of lack of holding back when you watch French movies, it's a whole other ball game compared to watching any Hollywood movies...

I think it might be because I'm such a massive slob, but when Dennis Quaid's character was messily munching on the shrimp and dipping it in the sauce, and the sounds, he seemed to be really enjoying it, it kinda looked delicious to me and made me want to have some of that. I think I might need to have some better table manners... Nah, I'm just going to keep sucking down my food like a vacuum cleaner, actually, it's the most efficient way to get energy...

I still don't know where the younger clone comes from. I mean, her organs are in there, where does the body fit? Wouldn't your spine break and cause you to die?
