Those are Chicago's tornado sirens not air raid sirens

sirens extremely loud.

Wild how I never see them, yet I hear them all the time, like right now with the storms coming. I need to look up more!

For extra context on that 138db:

Every 10dB increase feels twice as loud.
95db+ is where your hearing gets damaged.
105dB - chainsaws are around this loud for users
115dB - is a rock concert
125dB - is physically painfull
135dB - above this level you will almost instantly damage your hearing permenantly upon exposure
138dB - this siren

That siren also used for another reason. Chicago has a STRICT CITYWIDE CURFEW for minors. Anyone under 18 needs to be home before 10pm or they get picked up by the cops and taken home where the cops will hand the parents a ticket.

The signal curfew by playing the siren a single time at 10pm. When the siren goes off, all children are supposed to be home unless accompanied or in the presence of an adult. Meaning they can play in the backyard freely, but can't be outside their yards after 10pm without an adult outside and watching them.

I remember this sound happening every Tuesday @ 1030 hours growing up in Chicago.

This still happens in Chicago. Not once a month. But once a Week! Every single freaking week! It's at 10:00 in the morning. I remember when it was at 10:30am.

It's not just Chicago, sirens are tested all over Illinois the same day and time every month

as a former Chicagoan now residing in Phx since 2008, the sound of the siren in this video seriously triggered such anxiety. I survived the Plainfield Tornado in 1990 and had many other close calls over the years. I am deathly afraid of tornadoes!

My town had an air raid system for the same reason. The only realy time it was used, was to announce "no school". If a winter snowstorm was bad enough, they would run the air raid sirens. The storm would have to be particularly bad, but it was used. So yeah, as a little kid, we used to love hearing the air raid sirens in the winter, it meant no school and play in the snow.
