Complete 6pm newscast from the ABC affiliate serving the Marquette, Michigan market, recorded on Friday, September 6, 2024. The station is owned by Morgan Murphy Media, who acquired it late last year from the estate of longtime owner Stephan Marks.
This is the last newscast from the station's Ishpeming studio. On Monday, the station will begin airing newscasts from the studio of WJMN called "My UP News".
In April 2024, Morgan Murphy through separate company Sullivan's Landing, LLC acquired MyNetworkTV (and former CBS) affiliate WJMN from Nexstar Media. While it was nice that Marquette had four separate newsrooms for a time, it was obvious it was not going to be sustainable long term and this now brings that number back down to three. If I had to guess, the company probably felt it was cheaper to just acquire WJMN and its infrastructure than bother making a major investment in WBUP. The studios are also distantly located from the main center of Marquette, which makes attracting talent difficult and requires more of a drive for news items from that city. As a result, the WBUP newscasts tend to focus on other areas of the market.
At the end, the anchor gives a goodbye and notes that the station has worked on very low staffing since March (which could've been why Morgan Murphy decided to acquire WJMN). WBUP has not had a sports department in months and a weather department in many years. Until NewsNet was shut down last month, WBUP was depending on them both for weather (custom taped forecasts for the market) and sports (which was just a segment of Sports News Highlights cut down and aired inside the newscast). Sports went away while WJMN began taping weather for WBUP for the past month, the first sign of sharing among the two operations. Due to limited staffing (as the anchor noted), the 6pm newscast was WBUP's only newscast for the past few months. The 5pm hour was eliminated while the 11pm is just a repeat of the 6pm. That is also why they now use a generic open that doesn't mention a time.
I will give Morgan Murphy credit for continuing local news here and not eliminating any jobs. This is in contrast to what they did in Alpena by just broadcasting Traverse City news to that area. The viewers will benefit from a better quality product and combining the two staffs will give the viewers a more balanced newscast to better compete against long dominant WLUC and newer CBS affiliate WZMQ, whose owner has invested quite a bit into it in terms of staffing and quality.
It should be noted that while WBUP acknowledged the changes coming Monday, WJMN did not (thanks to my fellow BP server partner @redtekki/R Archives for checking). Both stations however are running promos for the new newscasts.
Graphics are in-house and music is a production track called "Chance Of A Lifetime" from Universal Production Music.
Anchored by Jessica Potila with weather from meteorologist Tom Kippen (based at WJMN). Includes reports from Andrew Dymburt (ABC News), Thomas Fournier, Alyssa Erwin (WJRT), Melissa Adan (ABC News), and Karen Kim (WWSB).
Commercial breaks not included since I took this off of Zeam.
