How often should you do this?

Useless method of cleaning. We've found the spray arms get small debris stuck inside and its very difficult to get it out. It would be very helpful if theses arms could open for proper cleaning.

You can push the debris back through the holes, but the material is still inside the arms, so it can redeposit. This piece definitely needs to come apart.

It's such a temporary fix that it's hardly worth the effort. All you're doing is pushing the debris back into the spray arm and it then soon gets stuck AGAIN!! Isn't there a better to clean the holes in the spray arm????

I agree. Toothpicks just delay the problem. The arms should come apart for cleaning.

Leaving this solution here in case it helps others. My symptoms: dishes in the top rack weren't being cleaned, and dishes in the bottom rack were ok but not squeaky clean, as when the dishwasher was new. After cleaning the sprayer arms and feed tubes, which did nothing, it turned out that the root cause was a clot of debris in the recirculation pump. If you look in the sump area at the bottom of the dishwasher, you'll see that there are TWO drain paths for water: one to the left, where there's a screwed in plastic panel; and one to the right, via a finger-width plastic tunnel. The RIGHT-HAND PATH is the one that feeds water to the sprayer arms, and can get clogged by debris that somehow gets around the filters at the bottom of the dishwasher. I used tweezers, pliers, and various other improvised hooking/grabbing/picking tools to pull a giant wad of material out of that tunnel. I reassembled everything, and problem solved!

This is a huge design flaw for Bosch dishwashers. The best way to clean these i've found is to tape it to a shop vac and suck/blow it out so the crud is removed. but this is obnoxious to have to do once per quarter which seems to be about the average at this point.

Completely agree with all comments below. Spray arms should come apart, toothpick method just shoves it back into arms where only a portion of the debris can be "backflushed". For as much as a Bosch costs, this is cheap and short-sighted.
Also noticed my model SHU4302UC/06 has no user manual on their support website. Disappointed to say the least.

This doesn't help at all when there are little bits of hard stuff stuck inside the arms that clog the holes

Thanks for the simple video. How do egg shells, hair balls, labels and bread ties get into the dishwasher? 🤨💪 I dunno but I fixed my dishwasher thanks to you!

A lot of men in the comments, for gunk in those holes you could use vinegar or any STRONG descalling agent to loosen it. Soak and submerge the sprayers in it. It’s mostly minerals anyway. You could use borax too.
