I have a genuine question about American football.
As far as I understand they can toss the ball backwards too right? "Laterals".

1.When does it happen and why?
2.If 1. doesn't answer this, why don't they do it more often even eventually creating set-plays from it, Rugby-like? I mean a team pulling out such a move could be very impredictible and maybe, correct me if wrong, but completely change the game?
